Overview

The Celtic spirit exulted not only in the moods of nature but also in the passions and powers of the human heart. The voices of "unfettered crofters and cottars, herdsmen and shepherds" gave us lyrical and powerful love songs and love rites, invocations of spiritual grace and beauty, tales of romance with courtly or fairy lovers, verses born of rivalries, tragedies, longing and despair, death and mourning.

No one can say when or by whom the Gaelic originals were composed; they were handed down through the generations by oral tradition as precious and intimate possessions. It is a tribute to Carmichael's sensitivity to their value that the Highlanders shared these verses with him.
