Overview

From the complex, colorful, and sometimes harsh world of New Orleans comes a collection of poetry centered on life in all its facets. Irish, tough, and eloquent, poet Alton channels his experiences growing up the Big Easy's St. Thomas Projects into hard-hitting, honest verse. Alton's poetry encompasses us all-parents, siblings, friends, and even strangers. While greed, hate, anger, death, and sadness are part of the natural order of nature, Alton also believes love and kindness, peace and life, and all the good and bad things that co-exist in our world are also natural. With unique rhythms and soul-stirring prose, these poems touch on the wide breadth of experiences in our lives. From encouraging us to live each day to the fullest in "Living Out Loud" to the ramifications of hate-filled actions in "Right to Bleed," Alton presents both sides of life and forces us to see them both for their true colors. Dedicated to all people and the world we share, Thoughtlessthought will challenge, inspire, and delight.

Chapter One

    THOUGHTLESSTHOUGHT

    An open supplication,
From a confused a crazy mind.
    Superlative opposition,
    To sanity any kind.
    I must confess I just don't know,
Where these thoughts will land in time.
Will they stand the test of man?
Or will they cross the line?

    HIGH FALUTION

Is it cosmic justice that turns this world?
    Will the unanswered questions rule?
Are your thoughts confused and swirled?
Do they glitter like some polished jewel?

    When insanity becomes commonplace,
What becomes of the simple man?
With the light of reason on his face,
Can he live life without a plan?

While he rambles about in doubt,
Seeking a way through this maze.
A blind man feeling his way about,
    In endless nights endless days.

A lifetime lived as a dream,
    Becomes confused and merged.
    Crazy laughter turning into screams,
    All hate and anger purged.

    Passing into clear crystal light,
Becoming the essence of future man.
    Doing everything he must,
    To be everything he can.

    SOLITUDE

Peace flows around me, silence fills the air.
Once again I sail the sea, sailing far without a care.
Looking deep into the crystal blue, I see, my eyes are clear.
this life I thought I knew, the things that I held dear.
I think it's all a dream, my world is very near.
Sliding softly in a liquid stream,
Mother's waiting, and I have no fear.

    RUNNING BACKWARDS

As my thoughts move back in time,
    To where I was before,
Things I thought where I'd been,
    I can remember every door.
Things I've seen things I've done,
    The worlds I traveled through.
All of it both good and bad,
    All with payment due.

I believe I'm in the black,
But hold this thought in trust.
    My faith is solid iron,
There's not a spot of rust.
    Running with wild abandon,
I roamed this world so free.
    No thoughts for tomorrow,
Right now! Was enough for me.
    Time after time after time,
    I ran into solid walls.
    This never stopped me,
I had heard the wildness call.
    Lived my life wide open,
    As a solitary man.
    Lived free, fast and hard,
    Refused to have a plan.

    Time keeps right on passing,
    Old age is coming around.
    Even this won't stop me,
It will only slow me down.
My steps are still quick and light,
    Thoughts and eyes still clear.
    Still do all those things,
    My crazy mind holds dear
    Life's a stroll
    Long live Rock & Roll

SWEET DREAMS

Drifting, thoughtlessly
aware. Surreally kaleidoscopic, vague, bright color dazzle
closed eyes. Spiraled tunnels to your soul. Translucent
thoughts, randomly exposed, connected through consciousness.
Focused, abstract reality in the hazy smells of life.
Transcending layers of memory. Each perfect in imperfection ,
acknowledgement. Response carrying you deeper away. Worlds
familiar and strange strangely familiar
new unknown. Finite timelessness the past the future the
present. All in a second lost on the astral plain. Memories,
fantasies, collidemerge open to interpret as the same.
Closed to belief, never named, slipping, falling, fading away
spreading golden light. When you day comes leaving escaping the night.
Drifting, thoughtlessly,
aware

    LIVING OUT LOUD

Heeyyy, WHAT'S UPPP, I said to the man,
Do you live like an ostrich,
With your head in the sand?
    Let me help you brother,
    Please take my hand.
    Stand up be free,
    Like anybody can.

Life's too short to worry about things,
Both ups and downs life has it swings.
Be like an eagle with air in your wings,
Life can be great a life full of flings.

    Live life to the fullest,
    Everyone dies.
    Laugh when you can,
    Everyone cries.
    Eat ALL the cakes,
    Then eat the pies.

Life's too important to live by a guess,
    To live to the fullest,
    Clean up the mess,
If you want to be happy,
    You can't do any less,
    Enjoy while you can,
    Life's sweet caress.

    TRANCENDENCE

    Once
    I lived inside my dreams
A nice safe place to hide
    Or so it seems
    Days passed in sweetness
    The same in many ways
    Overcome by the bleakness
    I raised my head
    Looked around
At life as it truly is
At the joys to be found

    NOTHING IS NOTHING

    NOYHING EVER CHANGES
    NOTHING STAYS THE SAME
    NOTHING LIVES FOR EVER
    NOTHING EVER DIES
    NOTHING IS THE TRUTH
    NOTHING IS A LIE
    NOTHING ALWAYS LAUGHS
    NOTHING ALWAYS CRIES
    NOTHING STAYS IN DARKNESS
    NOTHING STAYS IN LIGHT
    NOTHING IS WRONG
    NOTHING IS RIGHT
    NOTHING LIVES WITHOUT PEACE
    NOTHING WITHOUT PAIN
    NOTHING TO BE LOST
    NOTHING TO BE GAINED
    NOTHING HAS A RYTHYM
    NOTHING HAS A RHYME
    NOTHING WITHOUT SPACE
    NOTHING WITHOUT TIME
    NOTHING IS ABSOLUTE
    NOTHING IS DIVINE
    NOTHING IN THIS WORLD
    NOTHING ON MY MIND

    RIGHT TO BLEED

    Warm gulf winds blow,
    Across the sleepy little town.
In the back of Roscoe's bar,
    The boys are getting down.
They have no need for any speed,
They're all hyped up on hate.
    Hurry boys, the devil calls
    And the hour's getting late.
Sharpen your knives, load your guns,
    Fools, both one and all.
It sends shivers through your bones,
    To hear their bloodlust call.
Ice cold blood, they have no hearts,
Their eyes are pitch black holes.
They war against the rights of man,
    They have sold their souls.
What will it take to stop this thing?
    This madness, if you will.
Will we have to let the bullets fly?
Can we take a magic pill?
    They're out there, everywhere,
Their thoughts as black as coal.
    Will you stand and fight,
Or hide, in the deepest hole?
Can you take the pain? Is it worth the gain?
To stand in the light of man.
Will you stand aside? Watch others die,
    Or do everything you can?
    Warm gulf winds blow,
    Across the sleepy little town.
In the back of Roscoe's bar,
    The boys are getting down.
We have the need for lots of speed,
Can't leave it up to fate.
    Hurry boys, the angels call
    And the hour's getting late

    LOSING TIME

    Vague schemes, mystic dreams,
Both fill this heart of mine.
I've searched this world from end to end,
    Found peace hard to find.
Have we really lost this race?
Our quest for dignity, the human kind.
Or are our thoughts just so much smoke?
Lost in the fogs of time.

    STOP THE PAIN

I cried my face turned to the sun
my soul lay shattered at my feet
as I thought of the things I'd done
    whispering to myself
    my heart in pain
    agony beyond belief
    feelings I can't explain
    my needs were so many
    my feeling so few
I would give my life to go back in time
    how little I really knew
the feelings of others didn't matter
love wasn't part of my plan
    I lived in blind arrogance
didn't conduct myself as a man
    eternity draws ever nearer
    either heaven or hell
    there's little doubt in this
from those that know me well
    Can I change all this?
Can I turn this hurt around?
    Make enough amends
    Can inner peace be found?
    I'm scared
    And know the reason why
    Pain flows like fire
As I stare into the sky

    SUMTHIN' FISHY

    Catfish are biting
    Warm breezes fill the air
    As we slowly drift along
    A day without a care
    Butterflies and dragonflies
    Both go skimming by
    While off in the distance
You can hear a baby cry
    Sunlight bouncing off the stream
    Flowers everywhere
    Look in the shadows
    Beneath the trees
    You will find me there

    SNAPSHOT

    That could be you,
    Standing on a windy street.
    With dirty hands,
    Dead
    Lifeless eyes,
    Looking tired and beat.

    I could be the one,
    Who stared into the sun.
    My brain,
    Deep fried and crispy,
From the drugs I did for fun.

    They could be our children,
With no place to call home.
    Wandering lost and hungry.
    Scared,
    And all alone.
    These could be anybody,
    Living life in sad despair,
    Dejected rejected and neglected,
By a world that doesn't care.

    Sometimes we live as fools,
Live our lives as in dreams.
    Barking at the fullest moon,
Our minds full of silent screams.
Every time and place you look,
    There's people without hope.
    Busted schemes and shattered dreams,
    Lives gone up in smoke.
Be aware of where you're standing,
Be aware of where you will fall,
Beware life brings some crazy shit,
    Beware of your last call.

    WORLD FULL OF TEARS

AS I LOOK AROUND THIS WORLD OF MINE, MY THOUGHTS ARE
GOOD, SOFT AND KIND, BUT IS THIS A PLACE I REALLY WANT
TO SEE? IT'S A WORLD GONE MAD, CRUEL AND MEAN, PEOPLE
LIVING LIKE SOULESS MACHINES, WITH NO KINDNESS, GRACE
OR PERSONAL DIGNITY, WARS EVERYWHERE, FAMINE AND
STRIFE, WHERE IS THE GLORY IN THIS THING CALLED LIFE? IS THIS
THE WAY IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE? A WORLD FULL OF LIES, A WORLD
FULL OF ANGER, EVERYONE ALONE, EACH ONE A STRANGER,
NEVER LAUGHING, NEVER BEING FREE, SOCIETIES CRASHING AT
AN INCREASING RATE, PEOPLE WITHOUT MORALS, HUNGRY DOGS
AT YOUR GATE, THESE THINGS FILL ME WITH INFINITE SADNESS,
RUINING THIS BEAUTIFUL PLACE, SCREWING UP MY PERSONAL
SPACE, DRIVING ME TO THE BRINK OF MADNESS, HOW WOULD IT
FEEL TO LIVE WITHOUT HATE? TO LIVE WITH JOY, WHAT WILL IT
TAKE? WALK SIDE BY SIDE, A WORLD TO REMAKE, IT NEEDS TO BE
DONE, MAKE NO MISTAKE, WE NEED TO START NOW.
    BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.

    NEW ORLEANS NIGHT

    Smooth and round,
    Tall and brown,
    She slid into my sight.
    With an earthly flounce,
    And a sexy bounce,
    It seemed my lucky night.
    Warm as sunshine,
    Adult fun time,
    Voyeuristic delight.
    Sweet and sassy,
    Always classy,
    Everything just right.
    Soft and soothing,
    Almost cooing,
    She whispers in my ear.
    Don't be a fool,
    I have a massive tool,
    Then he disappeared.

    BLUE SKIES

    This is a great life,
At least for the last few days.
I think of all the folks I've seen,
Their happy smiles and friendly waves.

This is a world worth living,
At least for the last few days.
Life's good, goodness in an endless stream,
Of kind, sweet people with gentle ways.

    This is all worth seeing,
At least for the last few days.
    Standing under a blazing sun,
Or moonlit hills wrapped in haze.

This is a time for being,
At least for the last few days.
Your path is clear, home is near,
    Not wandering in a maze.

This is a time for loving,
At least for the last few days.
    Friends and family gathered around,
    Where everyone laughs, everyone plays.

This is a time for peace,
At least for the last few days.
As the world wishes in endless hope,
At least for the next few days.

    SPLIT IMAGE

    He's seen walking,
    You'll see him everywhere.
His rambling walk and dirty clothes,
    And wonder "does he care?"

    Who are these people
    Who stand and stare
As I go quietly on my way?
    Do they have no shame?
    Is it just a game?
Have they nothing kind to say?

    Who is this man
    This broken dream?
    Another mother's son?
    Does he live someplace?
    Does he have a home?
Is he always on the run?

    They do not understand me,
The fault is all their own.
It's plain to me, they cannot see,
    I'm a king, without a throne.

    Broken and rejected,
    Run over by life.
He seems to me, a lonely man,
Bound and helpless in his strife.

I walk these streets in freedom,
No chains to bind my will.
Each day I choose a different path,
    Climb another hill.

    Does he ever laugh?
    Ever play?
Is there joy in him to be found?
    Is he all alone?
    Are the streets his home?
    Has he any friends around?

    Lush green valleys, sparkling lakes,
My roof is a million stars.
    And I wonder why
    They would choose to live
    Behind their self made bars.

So we pass, without a sound.

    PLEASE

    come to me.
not in spirit, not in dreams.
i need to feel your soul,
    my other half it seems.
    with the lights down low,
you will find me by my heat.
bring to me your trembling thighs,
to taste your lips, so honey sweet.
bare to me your luscious breast
    pounding hearts filling with desire,
    greet me with open arms,
let my hands stroke your fires.
allow me to feast my eyes,
    where no other can.
    share one breath with you,
man to woman, woman to man.

    whisper my name softly,
i give my heart in trust.
our minds becoming lost in time,
as our bodies fill with lust.

    joined in earthly delights,
    lost with no control.
    living inside of natures plan,
    two people, one soul.

    THE BUM

    Nothing more, nothing less,
An ancient soul, laid to rest.
    He'd traveled forgotten roads,
    On restless winds.
Spent moonlit nights in hilly folds,
Saw countless sights in fabled lands.

    Years lived in dreams,
The world held in his gentle hands.
Old eyes that had gazed at wonders,
    Both gross and sublime.
    Spent starry nights in peace,
    In restful slumbers.
    Never a place to go,
    Never a place to stay.

He lived by his own will,
    Waiting to fade away,
    Just passing through,
    Smiling,
    With other worlds to see.

    MISSING LIFE

I walk these streets in sadness,
    Cold winds on sunny days.
Seeking things so hard to find,
Lost loves lost lives in many ways.

I can feel that they are out there,
    Those lonely hearts like mine.
Trapped and stuck in our busy lives,
It seems we cannot find the time.

We reach out search the web,
In the privacy of our home.
From the solitude of our vacant bed,
It's the websites that we roam.

We laugh and live in happy times,
Keep our hearts on dusty shelves.
To many days, to many nights,
    Too many hours by ourselves.

I'm looking for a good one,
Someone kind to fill my needs.
    Is there anyone out there,
The ether humming with our pleas.

    Must be strong and gentle,
The weak and angry need not apply.
As we look with nimble fingers,
the one we seek may just walk by.

    THE OTHER SIDE OF GLASS

    Blindness taught me to see,
    Thoughtlessness, to think.
My chains have set me free,
    Thirst, my need to drink.
The world has shown I'm small,
    With cruelty, I'm kind.
When in love I am tall
    While I'm seeking to find
    The meaning of it all.

    CHILDREN WITHOUT LIGHT

    Where do our children go
When the world turns out its light?
Are they safe at home in their beds?
Do they roam the streets at night?
    Will they have pleasant dreams
    At the families side?
Or feel the crushing need to run
    With nowhere safe to hide.
Do not mistake this real thing,
Between the darkness and the light.
    Sometimes lines get very thin
    Between what's wrong, or right.

    How do they feel,
    Those children of the sun?
    Laughing, playing,
    Always having fun.
    Families loving, people caring,
    All good things to come.
Blind to what hides in darkness,
    Where evil things get done.

    Do they have to struggle?
    Live a blackened fate?
    Always scared, always fearing,
    there's something at the gate.
    Afraid of every shadow,
    Jumping at every sound,
    Living in hopeless hope,
    Knowing,
    They won't soon be found.

    CITY BEAT

    There it is,
Can you hear that whistle blow?
    It's leaving out for Georgia,
And we're moving way to slow.
    Train, train, train,
Hear the thunder of its rail.
    We're leaving just in time,
We were on our way to jail.

    I'm going home to Mama,
    Tell her what I've done.
Got caught up in the city lights,
    Called it having fun.
If I can just get back to Daddy,
I'll tell him all the facts.
Had to leave town really fast,
Left a blood trail on my tracks.
City life is hard and fast
    For simple country boys.
That's why both day and night,
    We carried all our toys.
    Didn't want to do it,
    The situation forced my hand.
Can only be pushed so far,
    Had to make a stand.
