Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
Young playwright confronts the Big Questions: sex, mortality, etc., in a debut by a young playwright.

Jennifer Ward is delighted when a young director tells her he loves her play: Peter Heller cites all the reasons why it'd be crazy to put on the work of a nobody like her, but then he promises her the moon. Okay, he promises her an Equity-waiver production in an Off-Off-Off Broadway theater in a Chelsea office building. How can she say no to such a cute guy? Maybe he'll sweep her off her feet and make passionate love to her-an experience Jennifer has been searching for ever since her sister Diana, a manic-depressive actress, committed suicide four years ago. No matter how many Cosmo articles she reads to improve her sex life, she still feels nothing, and masturbating isn't working out. Well, she can always throw herself into her work, now that casting is beginning for Til Death Do Us Part, a dramatic, blow-by-blow account of her bickering relationship with her dead sister. Looks like Kelly Cavanna, a gorgeous unknown, will bring just the right touch of crazy selfishness to the part. As seductive offstage as on, Kelly hits on Jennifer, confessing that the memory of her rape at ten by a fourteen-year-old boy who let his sister watch still turns her on. Jennifer has no such tender memories to share and isn't excited by Kelly's advances-or exactly surprised when Kelly seduces Peter a few weeks later. What the heck. Jennifer's been to bed with Peter and still didn't feel anything much. But her play is a surprise hit in a small way, and the public catharsis of playing herself on stage when the other actress gets a better part seems to help her troubled soul. Other successes follow. Kellymakes the move to Hollywood, then back to Broadway. Time marches on, right?

Great title, limp story.

This is the best chick lit book I've ever read. Very gentle but very honest and real. Very very recommended.

if you want the fairy tale ending...keep looking!

I loved this book because I laughed and laughed and laughed...and could relate. It was exactly the break from reality we all need- a lot of humor with an acceptable dosage of reality thrown in. It was light, entertaining, but still had tiny details of real life that on one wants to talk about in person. I loved this book, but it didn't have that perfect ending where she gets the guy and lives happily ever after-fade to sunset. Some people might want to pass on the book for this reason, but for me it was a treasure.

    Thoughts While Having Sex

Other comments aside, this is a good book, engaging, funny, full of little secrets i didn't think other girls knew or believed. Take it with you on a long bus ride to the Poconos (as I did) or for a rainy day and enjoy!

    My Thoughts while Having Sex

In the last year I've searched for titles that would interest me and the few books i picked up I found to be disappointing. Picking up 'Thoughts While Having Sex' I read the first few pages and could not put the book down. I had noticed that the author was new and realized we need to give these new authors a chance and now I do,enjoying more and more books each month. I laughed and cried all at the same time. I got so involved in this book the characters became real to me and were apart of my life. I hope Stephanie Lehmann has more to come!!!!

    Shows women's struggle with relationships

As an expert on the topic of man/woman relationships (I'm the author of 'Don't Call That Man!A Survival Guide To Letting Go' Hyperion 1999) I have to say that Stephanie Lehmann did an excellent job of portraying her main character's struggle with her feelings about her relationhip with the director of her play/potential boyfriend. In addition to her wonderful charaterizations I found the story compelling and interesting. I think this is the only novel I have ever heard of that takes place in the world of off Broadway Theatre which I found fascinating. I look forward to reading her next book.

    Thoughts While Having Sex

I enjoyed this book immensley. I disagree obviously with the Kirkus Review. I thought 'great book, questionable title' but the titled caused my friend to pick it up--so obviously in that regard it worked. The book is filled with gem moments and wry, witty observations. For anyone one--who's questioned their intelligence, beauty, humor, and life--this is a good and entertaining, and insightful. Read it and then buy a copy for a friend!

    For a really great read...

I loved this book! Tells what it's really like to be a young woman coming to New York to make it in the theater world - it's tougher than anyone thinks - and tremendous fun! "Thoughts While Having Sex" is like "Sex and the City" meets "All About Eve." Supported by a fascinating love triangle - actress, director, playwright - Lehmann's book took me to places like Off-Off-Broadway, with its theaters held together by duct tape and soul; to "garden restaurants" in Hell's Kitchen overlooked by SRO's; and into the apartments of ruthless actresses for whom the casting couch is merely another prop in the spectacle of their own private show. If you "love the theater," this book is for you! If you hate it, you'll find plenty to support your point of view! And, oh yeah, the writing itself is great. And the sex scenes will make you laugh - or cry. Melissa from New York

Don't let title scare you away

The title of this book and its cover art does suggest it's a "sex and the single girl in the city" type book but I fear the publisher's packaging was just a marketing ploy, and I hope it doesn't hurt sales for the talented Lehmann. This book is charming, heartfelt and true. The protagonist is a playwright struggling with watching the production of her play, an autobiographical tale about herself and her sister, who committed suicide. The characters are well drawn, but the triumph of this book is the heroine's journey to discover the self she has been hiding. As an author myself, I generally try to stay away from reviewing books but I was moved to review this one because I don't want anyone to mistakenly pass over this book, thinking it's a cookie-cutter type. I was impressed with its originality and vision ... and really do recommend this book.

    review

This funny and quirky book is set in the East Village and Hell¿s Kitchen in New York City and offers a wry glimpse into an Off-Off-Broadway production -- where dreams and roaches vie for a place on stage. Its playwright-narrator writes original plays that parallel and frankly recount her own experiences, though she has a hard time biting hold of life, and getting her plays produced. But she struggles on, exploring sex, love, and especially ambition, and how to square it with the desires of the divas around her -- especially one from her past (a neurotic sister whose flamboyant urgency is only slightly lessened by the fact of being dead) and one in her present (a greedily hard-driving leading lady who plays the sister in her play). Warm, funny, and occasionally heart-wrenching, this is a wonderful read and I highly recommend it.

    Attention: People with Difficult Sisters

I highly recommend Stephanie Lehman¿s, novel Thoughts While Having Sex, to anyone who has a sister., particularly a difficult one. If you don¿t have a sister, but grew up in a family, or even if you just like the theater (you¿ll get the inside story on the workings of off-off Broadway ), give this book a try. It¿s a great read. Ms. Lehman¿s characters struggle with issues of sex (mostly bad) and family (even worse), success and failure, art and reality. They are brave, honest and funny. The plot is jazzy and fast moving and the tone deceptively light, for Ms. Lehman handles big themes with great subtly, through characters who ring true and get under your skin.
