Overview

If you thought that learning Spanish would be too difficult, then think again! Here are over three thousand words you already know in Spanish. They are words that are exactly like the English in spelling and meaning, or they are words so similar to the English, that if you guessed their spelling or meaning, you would be right-or at least you would be close enough to be understood....

This little book does not teach you how to make sentences in Spanish, but it does make you aware that you already have a good Spanish vocabulary, and it will teach you something about what English and Spanish have in common. To help, we have divided the words you already know into seven major categories, which you can see in the Table of Contents.

Pat Holt
The title says it all: If you want to learn Spanish but feel a bit daunted, turn to any page in this book, and voila: Here are words you already know-iceberg, idea, ideal, imaginable, imperceptible, imperial, implacable-each spelled exactly the same in both languages. The book lists identical words first, then words to which you simply add a vowel on the end (defect, defecto; diet, dieta) or a verb suffix (complete, completar; depend, depender), or change tion to cion (sensation, sensacion), and so on until you've looked in awe at 3,024 common words.
