Threads of Identity: A Classroom Tapestry:Celebrating Our Stories of Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging
Welcome to Threads of Identity: A Classroom Tapestry!

This book is a collection of real stories written by my students and me. Together, we explore the beautiful and complex ways our identities shape who we are. You will read about many different backgrounds, cultures, families, and experiences. Every story is special, and every voice adds a unique thread to our classroom tapestry.

Our hope is that you will see yourself somewhere in these pages, and also learn about others whose lives may be different from yours. Through reading our stories, you might discover how much we all share—and how much we can learn from one another.

Identity is something we all carry with us, and it continues to grow and change throughout our lives. By writing this book, we hope to inspire you to think about your own identity, to be proud of who you are, and to appreciate the beautiful diversity around you.

About the Author

The Author, Wafa Abidi, is an Ontario Certified Teacher who has been teaching in Canada for over 13 years. Originally from Pakistan, Wafa brings her experiences as a brown, Muslim, hijabi, immigrant woman into her teaching, advocating for inclusive, culturally responsive, and anti-oppressive education. She previously authored I is for Identity and I is for Intersectionality: An Introductory Interactive Book about Identity and Intersectionality for our Young Readers (2024). Passionate about amplifying student voices, she believes every child deserves to be seen, heard, and celebrated.

The Co-Authors, Grade 3/4 Students, are a vibrant, diverse group of young writers who bravely share their stories in this book. Each student co-wrote their chapter, designed their identity puzzle piece, and contributed to this collaborative project. Their words offer an honest, inspiring, and powerful reflection of what identity, belonging, and community mean to today’s children.
