Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Remy Dou
Killer weather gushes forth. From lightning strikes to cyclones, the pages of history contain somber stories of those who have tried to overcome the power of nature and failed. Historical records remind us that humans have fought against the elements for hundreds of years and will continue to do so for hundreds more. Garbe takes readers back as far as the Hundred Years War in France in an engaging narrative that describes deadly historical moments ascribed to weather’s nasty spin. The mix of weather and history resonates. This incredibly informative text should have a place on the shelves of every fourth and fifth grade classroom library. The page layout captures the eyes with historical photographs, large text, cool fonts, and interesting sidebars. The book ends with a summative timeline, a glossary, and a list of additional resources for teachers and students. Accounts of the number of people who have suffered greatly because of weather will implicitly urge young readers to learn how to stay safe and find ways to avoid future catastrophic events. Reviewer: Remy Dou; Ages 7 to 10.

Gr 3–6—From gladiatorial games to BASE jumping, these books recount both historical and contemporary dangers. Each title covers at least eight topics, most in spreads with one page that has a few paragraphs that describe the danger and the other with a full-page photo or illustration. Text boxes provide additional anecdotes and facts. Brutal Games! is heavily weighted toward contemporary extreme sports, and all the books focus on fairly recent and mostly American history. Although there are some interesting tidbits (e.g., the American presidency rates as a historically dangerous job), these volumes offer neither exciting characters nor the gruesome details that so fascinate children, and they don't contain enough information about individual topics for reports.
