Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
It is David Donshel's first day on the job as a firefighter in Hero City. The reader shadows David through his day as he gets to know his fellow fire fighters at the station and responds to a car accident and a three-alarm fire. The comparison is made between the engine company and the ladder company of a fire station. The intent to make the representation of fire fighters multicultural is very obvious. Although the subject directly relates to the community helper unit within the primary school curriculum, the vocabulary and concepts of this book are much too advanced for the intended audience. This book is part of the "Matchbox Hero-City Book Collection." 2003, Little Simon/Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing Division, Ages 5 to 8.
