Overview

Greg Mortenson has built a global reputation as a selfless humanitarian and children’s crusader, and he’s been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. He is also not what he appears to be. As acclaimed author Jon Krakauer discovered, Mortenson has not only fabricated substantial parts of his bestselling books Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools, but has also misused millions of dollars donated by unsuspecting admirers like Krakauer himself.

This is the tragic tale of good intentions gone very wrong.

One hundred percent of Jon Krakauer's proceeds from the sale of Three Cups of Deceit will be donated to the "Stop Girl Trafficking" project at the American Himalayan Foundation (www.himalayanfoundation.org/live/project/stopgirltrafficking).

Editorial Reviews

Mark Bowden
"The truth matters. Jon Krakauer's takedown of Greg Mortenson's book Three Cups of Tea and the charitable foundation he built from it is devastating. It is not just the fascinating story of a huckster who took publishers, philanthropists, journalists, academics, and a gullible public for a ride, but a detailed trip into the slippery netherworld where what matters most is what sells, not what really happened."

— Mark Bowden, author of "Bringing the Heat" and "Black Hawk Down"
Publisher's Weekly
"Packed with interviews and anecdotes that undercut Mortenson's image as a cheerful do-gooder, Krakauer's account of good intentions gone horribly wrong is a stunning example of investigative journalism."

— Publisher's Weekly
Elizabeth Taylor
“Krakauer forcefully claims that Mortenson improperly used his charity’s funds and failed to build all the schools he says he did.”

— Elizabeth Taylor, Literary Editor, Chicago Tribune

Outstanding, as usual! tho' short . . .

Through careful and thorough research Mr. Krakauer has revealed another charity who bases its treasury/income on lies and fantasies put forth in a profitable way by a clever charlatan. Americans are generous and caring and it makes me very very angry and sad to be taken by such duplicity. I hope Mr. Krakauer continues his probe into Mr. Mortensen's criminal behavior, or at least perhaps the IRS decides to take a long look into Mortensen's 'charity'. Keep on truckin' Krakauer!

    Highly recommended....an enlightening read!

In this concise book, Jon Krakauer exposes the truth about Greg Mortensen and the Central Asia Institute. In his inimitable and readable prose, Krakauer tells the true story of Mortensen's experiences in Central Asia from the time after his climb of K2 to the present. He reveals, after extensive and careful research, the facts of what has actually happened with the funds from the charity Mortensen established. The lies purported to be truth in Mortensen's books are exposed. This is a must read for anyone who has supported Mortensen's efforts in Asia.

Not that great expose of a conman. Not Krakaur's best, by far.

A good factual review of a conman, but not very interesting or compelling. Kind of whiney.

    Information worth passing along

It is an easy read that is not too lengthy. In a concise style, it explains the errors and dishonesty behind a noble idea that spawned a popular book and a charity.

Sad, but I really do believe it should be read by more people so they know what the charity really does with the money.

    Highly recommend

I am a long-time fan of Jan Krakauer's writing. This book is no exception to my opinion. It is a 75 page personal documentary, engaging and sadly informative.
