More About This Textbook

Overview

Three Kingdoms tells the story of the fateful last reign of the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220) when the Chinese empire was divided into three warring kingdoms. Writing some twelve hundred years later, the Ming author Luo Guanzhong drew on histories, dramas, and poems portraying the crisis to fashion a sophisticated, compelling narrative that has become the Chinese national epic. This abridged edition captures the novel's intimate and unsparing view of how power is wielded, how diplomacy is conducted, and how wars are planned and fought. As important for Chinese culture as the Homeric epics have been for the West, this Ming dynasty masterpiece continues to be widely influential in China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam, and remains a great work of world literature.

This abridged edition is particularly useful for undergraduate courses. For the complete text, see the unabridged edition, now available in two parts: Part One; Part Two

    Extravagant, true to it's reputation

A simple tale of lost battles, valor and love. It has a terific balance of violence, honor, and romance. It has also had video games made in it's image.

for those who are lovers of Romance of the Three Kingdom

You should definitely watch the DVD drama also, 84 episodes. Although it was made more than a decade ago, it is classic. I am afraid no future versions(which the filmmakers are planning) could excel this one. See how they fight the wars with their wits and intelligence, not violence.

ABRIDGED EDITION TO THE BEST TITLE EVER!!!

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is by far my most enjoyable book. And The, Three Kingdoms brings some of the best parts of all the volumes into one book. This book should be enjoyed by everyone. Koei also does a greatjob with creating a game franshise of it.

    Kiss your freetime goodbye

I have owned this book for over seven years. The original purchase was for a college paper. Since that time I have gone on to buy the unabriged, complete volumes and every variation I can find on this extremely grabbing and thought provoking book. If you hold any interest in history, warfare or any other subject, as this is one of only a few books that can touch on every topic of the human scope, then run and buy a copy for yourself. You will not regret it. -Jeff

    Three Kingdoms

Great book, but like most books that are based off of stories passed down for over 1000 years, the story loses much of its history and is replaced with what others wanted to it be like. Very good book none the less, just don't take the book to be all the historical. Oh and Dynasty Warriors give this book such a bad name its sad really.

A true epic, one of the best pieces of literature out there!!

This is a truly amazing piece of work. This talks about everything: Brotherhood, loyalty, treachery, and so much more. This is the best book I've ever read. Robert Moss is a genius. The way he translated the story is so fluent and clean. An awesome book!! Recommended to everyone!

Loved the Video Game...Loved the book!

For a school project, my senior class was asked to find a book online that we would like to read, read it, and to write an online review of it. Since I enjoy playing Dynasty Warriors 3, (A video game that is based on 3 Kingdoms) I thought I would get a little background information about the time, and the game. The book was amazing. It brought all of the characters that I had played in the game come to life. Not only do I recommend the book, but I would also recommend the game. I'm not really sure how much I would have understood about the book if I hadn't known anything about the time. It was easier to be able to picture the characters in my head. There were just a few things that I didn't like about the book, but I only took the rating down by one star. In my opinion there were way too many poem excerpts in the novel. In nearly every chapter there are at least three poems that have nothing to do with the plot or much else of anything. The only other thing that I didn't like about the novel was how chapters ended. The author would end with a question in every chapter, then on one line in would say 'Read On.' Besides these two things, Three Kingdoms is one of the best books that I have ever read and I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys reading about history, war, or enjoys the Dynasty Warriors video game series.

    Robert Moss

I have read the Three Kingdom by other translators and this version by Robert Moss is far the most detailed and fluid translation. He is a true scholar in East Asian Literature. I highly recommend this book.
