KNUT HAMSUN, born Knud Pedersen [1859-1952] was a Norwegian writer of novels, poems , and plays. In 1920, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, "for his monumental work, Growth of the Soil". Isaac Bashevis Singer held Hamsun as the "father of modern literature". He believed that the aim of literature to describe the mind, the "whisper of the blood, and the pleading of the bone marrow". His first psychological novel development was Hunger.
