If you were a beaver, how do you think that you would feel if you had trouble swimming well and building lodges? Beatrix is a beaver who lives with her parents and two older siblings in a spacious lodge on Beaver Creek. Her brother Bevan is an expert with twigs and mud. Her sister Beverly performs perfect underwater somersaults. But whatever Beatrix tries to do, whether gnawing trees, stashing branches, storing food for winter, mending the lodge, building a dam, or digging a canal, something always seems to go wrong. Wondering what she’s good for, one day she swims upstream and gets caught in a trap. And when Beverly and Bevan come to find her, they get caught in traps too. How can they get out? Will they ever be able to go home? Is there anyone who can help them? Did you know that beavers are the largest rodents in North America? In years past, our boys participated in a couple of nature programs at local parks, one in Dayton, OH, and the other in St. Louis, MO, related to beavers. Author Jean Heilprin Diehl’s cute story, accompanied by Cathy Morrison’s lovable illustrations, will not only acquaint children with the habits of beavers but also encourage them to discover their own special talents. Four pages of “For Creative Minds” learning activities include fun facts about beavers and their adaptations, a hands-on craft making lodges and dams, and thought questions concerning whether beavers are pests or environmental engineers. The publisher’s website has even more free activities. After reading Three Little Beavers, youngsters will be “as eager as a beaver” to know more about nature’s dam-builders.

Three Little Beavers My Review: Great story told by the author. Teaching kids that it is okay to be an individual. Beatrix is not perfect and skillful as her brother Bevan and sister Beverly, but she wasn’t one to sit back and watch her siblings do all the work. All summer, she did her best to gnaw trees and stash branches, mend the lodge and dam and even try to dig a canal but something always seem to go wrong. She decided to leave home to find out what she is good at. Then she gets trapped in a cage but remained calm even when her siblings came to rescue her and got trapped as well. When they saw that Beatrix was calm and quiet, they too grew quiet until they were rescued by humans and built a habitat to accommodate them. This book is prefect for children teaching them that it is okay to be an individual. The book also includes four pages of learning activities about Beaver Fun Facts and Adaptations, Hands On: Lodges and Dams, Busy Beavers: Pest or Environment Engineers? Love the illustrations by Cathy Morrison which makes the book fun to read. I will never stop being amazed by the illustrators and creative minds behind Sylvan Dell. When you receive one of their books to read to your children, the illustrations, the covers, the color and imagination - literally pop right out of the book. In fact, these books should be granted the highest honors possible for the amount of work that goes into them. In this lovely story, children get to meet up with Beatrix, Beverly and Bevan - the three beavers. These siblings, who live with their parents in the lodge on Beaver Creek, work a great deal. Bevan is an expert - he is what you would call a ‘master’ beaver. He can twist and alter those twigs and mud into perfection every single time. His sister, Beverly, is amazing, too. She can do underwater somersaults and all kinds of fancy tricks. These are two beavers who will grow up to be masters at their craft. Unfortunately, Beatrix just can’t seem to get the hang of anything. Her mud patches fall apart, she’s not all that good with building, swimming and, frankly, she’s tired of being around siblings who are better than she is. Sometimes it’s difficult to know what it is that we’re good at; after all, we all have a special skill, but Beatrix just can't find hers. So, off she goes. She sets her sights on a trip that will bring her upstream through dangers untold in order to find out what her special skills and talents might be. But poor Beatrix gets caught in a trap. Not a scary trap, mind you, it’s a trap set by kind people who are just trying to make sure that beavers don’t rip apart their lawn, but they would never hurt an animal. Unfortunately, Beatrix can’t get out of the trap and when her ‘superstar’ siblings come along to save her - they get trapped, too. Who has to save the day? Beatrix, and all of a sudden she knows exactly what she’s good at. The author wrote a truly uplifting story about how everyone has a gift. Just because your siblings may be able to do things better or quicker than you, doesn’t mean you can’t do something better than them. It just takes a little time to find out what you’re best at. And the ‘fun’ extras in the back of the book teach everything from beaver facts to building dams with your hands! Quill Says: Another 'star' that shines in the Sylvan Dell catalog. A great story that will help kids tremendously while having a fun time!
