It was a fine summer morning. The hands of the Dutch clock in the hall pointed to thirteen minutes past nine; those of the ormolu clock in the sitting-room to eleven minutes past ten; those of the carriage clock on the bookshelf to fourteen minutes to six. In other words, it was exactly eight; and Mrs. Hignett ...

Wonderful writing and story, terrible editing

Wodehouse has long been a favorite author and this book shows why, yet again. His keen observations of human nature, combined with his incredible skill at wordsmithing, make his works essential reading for any who want to be considered literate. Not only that, he's simply so much fun to read! While there are a couple of lines clearly dating the mindset at the time this was written (read "politically incorrect"), this, to me, served as a reminder of the way society used to view women and people of color. I was reminded of Oscar Wilde (The Importance of Being Earnest), though this is a very different story.

The major problem I had with this book was the exceptionally poor editing. It appears the original book was scanned and then converted to text. Clearly it was NEVER edited after this process. At times it's impossible to decipher how the text should read. This is simply unacceptable, particularly given the quality of the writing. I would have rated this book 5 stars, but could not, due to my difficulties with the lack of editing.
