Overview

In 2009, González published “Three Rings” a shockingly sexy, gritty and humorous fictional memoir that captures the flavor of growing up in the hood and is roughly based on his relationships with women from ages 13-20. González says that he “wanted Three Rings to focus on life in the hood but from the point of view of interpersonal relationships.” Three Rings weaves into the pages many of González’s powerful paintings of urban landscapes to underscore the themes of the book. ...

Editorial Reviews

DR. Frederick Wherry
"Three Rings is written from the heart. It is at times angry, at
times sorrowful, but it is always moving. It leaves you to ponder the
matter-of-factness of life. Whether the author is talking about love,
infatuation, or the struggle for respect, he gives you the feeling
that he is a living witness for experiences that would otherwise
remain invisible to those who live with too much comfort. Three Rings
is worth the read."

Thank you for sharing You managed to encapsulate the experiences of virtually every normal Latino in North Philly! I chuckled and reminisced about my own similar experiences, while reading 3 Rings. Except for your experience in Camden, NJ, virtually every Latino in Philly can relate to your story. Three Rings is a vivid, humorous and sometimes shocking evocation of life and love growing up in Philadelphia's Latino Spring Garden and the Kensington sections of Philadelphia. Gilberto Gonzalez's brilliant paintings which illustrate the book - capture the vibrancy and life force of the old neighborhoods."

    Quotes on Three Rings

Thank you for sharing your "fictional" anecdotes w/ us. You managed to encapsulate the experiences of virtually every normal Latino in North Philly! I chuckled and reminisced about my own similar experiences, while reading 3 Rings. Except for your experience in Camden, NJ, virtually every Latino in Philly can relate to your story. Thank you for brilliantly provoking our sensory memories....Silvy's, jumping out of 2nd fl windows, Edison High School ('81), the "discreet" church girl, La Combination Latina, 5th & Huntingdon, the kissing cousin and roaches, to boot. I will definitely read your book 4 - 5 more times before I put it away.

I like its honesty, its plain , coloquial language and its humor and irony. This book will appeal especially to people who know your neighborhood, but it could have wider appeal...it is a chronicle of a life and a place. I think you did a great job, and I am honored to have a signed copy of it :)

    Excellent Read!

You visited my class at Business HS and I appreciate you sharing your work with our students.

I am writing because I wanted to let you know that I read the copy you
left of "Three Rings" and I thoroughly enjoyed every story in it. On
almost every page I was in anticipation, wondering "where is this going to go next?". Sometimes I knew, sometimes I didn't; it was a great reading experience. I read the entire book in one sitting and could relate to various aspects of the main characters. I look forward to the next one and would definitely put out my hard-earned money from teaching to experience a few parts of my life over again through reading the stories you have written. The cover of the book may indicate they are fiction, but a few parts especially about girls, school, and relationships, were more than real to me. Thank you.

Three Rings, the most absorbing book ever read! Brings back memories of my pastime in Philadelphia.

First I would like to thank you Gil for writing such a great piece of art. Anyone that has grown up in North Philadelphia can relate to some of these stories; if not at least it will bring back memories of your own growing up adventures. I felt that this was the best $20 I ever spent. Being currently away from my family (due to work), reading the memoirs put my heart at ease. This made me look back on all the trials that put me in my blessed life that I have today. I am anxious to see more of your great work.
