Overview

How many self-help books are written by authors whose biggest success is selling self-help books? Three Simple Steps is different.

Since 2001, I have built four companies, starting each with a few hundred dollars. My first sold for $107 million, and I had similar success selling my second in 2011. I know what it takes to achieve professional, financial, and personal goals.

I have no identifiable skill or talent. I come from a poor background with as many hang-ups as anyone else. I had no family or business connections to help me. I have, however, studied the attributes, talents, and insights of sell-made men and women. From their successes, I formed three rules and have lived them consistently for 20 years. They have turned an ordinary life into extraordinary.

I'm not a sell-help guru, but a pragmatic businessman whose only advantage in life has been the application of these three simple steps.

I didn't write this to make money. All my profits from this book go to cancer research. I wrote it because it works. In recent years, I have taught these steps to individuals and groups and have seen the impact they can make in all avenues of life. Using these three steps, anyone from the road warrior to the stay-at-home parent can achieve a better, balanced, financially independent life.

Publishers Weekly
First-time author Blake boasts an impressive set of accomplishments: overcoming a dirt poor, hardscrabble existence in Wales to be selected for the Royal Navy, and jettisoning a corporate career to bootstrap a business which he eventually sold for more than million—during a recession, no less. Unlike many entrepreneurs or masters of the universe, Blake maintains that his success was not merely the result of intelligence, hard work, or even being in the right place at the right time; rather, he attributes his successes to three basic ideas which he identified and incorporated into his life after studying the biographies of self-made millionaires and other inspiring people. Blake expounds on these three characteristics: changing or reclaiming your mentality, creating moments of insight, and turning ideas into new experiences through intention. Jumping freely from anecdotes about the author, his family, and various entrepreneurs to various unscientific theories of mind control, the book is unlikely to appeal to readers who prefer logical formulas. However, for those who buy the concepts of positive thinking, meditation, and intentionality, this is an inspirational and thought-provoking read about how control over your mind and thoughts can yield a more fulfilling life. "One of the best experiences in my career was working for Trevor Blake. The ability to inspire one to achieve comes not through sharing a philosophy, but by sharing and imparting a belief in your success, and the steps to get there. Trevor did that for me. I continue to carry that belief throughout my varied career as a business executive, singer, and mother, and this book is a reminder that no matter what the barriers, you can achieve your own definition of greatness."
Joan Curto, Cabaret icon and bestselling artist of May I Suggest?

"This book bucks the self-help-book trends of bullets, charts, grids and web links, trading them for elegant, powerful truths about what it takes to create a prosperous, happy life -- at home and at work.
Tara-Nicholle Nelson, Inman News

"Offers sound advice and clear steps that could be applied to one’s own life."
Lani Relucio, Examiner.com

“I've read dozens of personal fixer-upper tomes by business gurus and New Age self-helpers, but this one is different in one important way: Blake actually followed his own three simple steps to get to where he is today—a happily married multimillionaire businessman and philanthropist. Finally, a self-help author who's done more than write self-help books!”

So far, so good, my friends

    WHY I BOUGHT THIS BOOK

I came across this book in Penn Station inside a bookstore that, like any other store NYC, has merchandise crammed as tightly as possible into their real estate. This book was in a prime spot on a shelf in the front of the store all to itself.

The title was vague: Three Simple Steps. I skimmed through it to see what these miracle steps were. Again, they were vague, I didn't really understand them, and I put it down. Then I noticed that every book was bent and creased the way a read book would be, but the shelf was FULL. It seemed hundreds of people did what I did, looked and when the answer wasn't instant, did not buy.

I picked it up again and searched Amazon to see what the word on the street was. Unfortunately, the book came out the day or two before and there was only one review. It was a 5 out of 5 star professional review, which, to me, is absolutely useless.

I read a little more about the author and some cool things came up:
    1) the author is giving ALL proceeds to cancer research.
    2) he's donating a copy to every library in the US.

I'm 27 and I don't read many self-help books, but this sounds rare and nice to me. I end up not purchasing the book then, but regretted it for some unknown reason and bought it on Amazon the next day along with a wedding planning book because I'm getting married next year ;).

    WHAT I THINK SO FAR

I just finished reading the first step, about the first third of the book, and wanted to post a quick, unprofessional review for those who are interested. This is a work in progress, and I will continue it as I read and apply the second two steps.

Out of respect to Mr. Blake, I will try not to spoil his steps or misinterpret them. The first step is a very mental step. I enjoyed it as I learned a lot about myself and the world surrounding me. The focus is avoiding and transforming negativity into positivity. Turning thoughts against something bad into thoughts for something else good. It seems, again, like a very vague idea, and maybe it is, but he eliminates that vagueness to the point of my satisfaction. He does this through:

    1) A healthy combination of real life stories (himself and other successful people). They can be a bit long and a bit fluffy (vague) but he always brings it back and they all have points.

    2) Science and research studies. He writes them to be very uncomplicated and I appreciate empirical evidence to back up mentality and feelings

    3) Most important: he gets specific! He'll break down techniques and points into concise, numbered, attainable actions, so you know exactly how to apply his approach in your life. Well, as exact as you can be for a target audience of unlimited various personalities..but again it satisfied me. It did not leave me feeling ripped off.

Overall, definitely worth reading. I will continue to read and apply, and here's a start:

    MY APPLICATIONS
I feel I should give a specific example on my life. I have a lot of student loan debt. When reminded of my debt, I reacted negatively and focused on the idea of having debt. That manifests in ways that work against me: I don't take financial risks and I believe I will have debt my whole life so I am very slow to pay it off (making minimum payments). I realized this myself before I even read the book and started paying more and feeling better about it. You probably (like myself and even Mr. Blake as he shares) experienced some of these "mentality gems" before

    I LOVE this book!!

Probably all that needs to be said about this book is contained in the quote on the back cover, by Drew A. Graham, Managing Partner of Ballast Point Ventures: "Finally, a book about how to succeed by an author who has actually achieved something before writing about it! Aspiring entrepreneurs would all benefit from reading and learning to live Three Simple Steps."

Not only is author Trevor Blake a fellow Brit, but he has accomplished things that I know -- from living most of my life in the UK -- take considerable courage and character. He started out a poor, working-class lad used only to village life in Wales, and broke through the barriers of education and class to be accepted into the Royal Naval College. He then went on to achieve high honor as an officer in Her Majesty's Royal Navy before leaving to work in pharmaceutical sales and then, following that, to make a personal fortune from establishing and selling four companies by dint of his expertise, courage, and faith in these three simple steps.

Blake has also accomplished what I know, as someone who has been intimately connected with book publishing for the past 25 years, to be incredibly challenging -- to write, as a first-time author, a business book that's more a memoir and actually make me care about his story.

The book is in three parts, mirroring the three steps Blake outlines in the book:

    Step One: Reclaiming Your Mentality.
    Step Two: Creating Winning Ideas.
Step Three: Transforming Ideas into Achievements.

These three simple steps are all we need to know. Yet think about how often they are choked in so much blather by self-help authors whose only claim to success is their ability to part a lot of gullible people from their money by selling them a "program" or "model" that's based on nothing more than showing readers how to part other gullible people from their money!

As for more details about what's in the book -- go buy it! Not only is it an enjoyable, engaging read but it has inspired me to sit, first thing each morning, and engage in “quiet time” (details in the book). And, yes, I can report that life has profoundly changed for me as a consequence of following the disciplined, yet simple, process that Blake outlines.

I feel more trusting of life and happier because I now hold what I stand for and what I want in my mind at all times (controlling my thoughts so mental projections of what I don't want stand no chance), having made "quiet time" the priority before anything else takes hold of my day, and knowing that my dreams also want me -- I just have to get out of my own way and allow, as Blake points out, "life to fill in the details."

This isn't one of those over-inflated books by a Johnny-Come-Lately, so if you're looking for something that suggests you're going to get super rich, quickly and easily, this might not be the book for you. But I consider it to be a wonderful blueprint for living a truly wealthy life -- one that is contented, happy, fulfilled and full of adventure. I love this book and strongly recommend it.
