Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The title and subtitle provide full descriptors for this colorful picture book. The cover art is of Thumbelina resting on her flower atop a pot held by her mother. Opening the book stopped me—the endpapers are very dark blue—almost black. Upon closing it, I see again the cover with Thumbelina and her mother in full color. From this range of lustrous color, the book's designer could have selected at least a warm color, if not a "Thumbelina-related" one, for her endpapers. Nit-picking, perhaps, but it would have made me put down the book had I just been shopping for a gift. The seemingly gratuitous insertion of "Denmark" as the swallow's destination also stopped me short. There is no earlier connection to the world of Hans Christian Anderson. The illustrations are generous and quite delightful. I especially liked that of the gingerbread boy as he scratches his chin in thought just before the fox appears to "rescue" him. 2001, Kids Can Press, $10.95. Ages 5 to 8. Gr 1-3-"The Elves and the Shoemaker," "The Gingerbread Man," and "Thumbelina" have been retold in an adequate manner. However, no sources are given for any of them. Tomova's pencil, watercolor, and ink illustrations are festive and do capture the mood of each story. The beautiful creations of the elves, the Gingerbread Man's smirk, and Thumbelina's moods are nicely rendered. Still, these stories appear in numerous other collections and in single editions, making this a marginal purchase for most collections.-Bina Williams, Bridgeport Public Library, CT Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
