Overview

Spinner Penhallow, the heir-apparent high priestess of the six covens of Dyer County, Indiana, was only four when her mother-another heir-apparent-vanished on All Hallows Eve twenty-seven years ago. Since that night, every Penhallow heir-apparent has gone missing each ninth Hallows Eve and is never seen again. On this fourth of the nine year cycles, the covens are prepared to fight back, but Spinner culls little comfort from her fellow Witches. None of them have had their memories of a magical killer stomped down like damp soil in her brain, memories of a face Spinner has struggled to remember. None of the others will be wearing the crown of the high priestess, and none of them but her face the real possibility of not living to see the dawn of November 1st. Spinner feels unready for all she must face as the heir-apparent high priestess to her wise old Granny Dee. But when the Dyer County high priest, Spinner's Grandpa Webber, is missing, too, the reticent Witch knows she has no place to hide from her duty to guard and protect the covens which will someday be under her care. In less than three months' time, Spinner must help an attractive detective-a man with his own family secrets-to find her grandfather who she knows is alive, then learn all she can from Granny Dee. This is the only way she can hope to break the horrific cycle of dead Witch priestesses. Can she keep both herself and a 200-year-old Pagan lineage alive through Halloween night? Can she lead them all through this Dark Night of the Soul and back into the light?
