Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
From the first driving guitar chords of "Giving It Over," Aussie rock outfit Newsboys are clearly putting fans on notice: They're baaaack. Thrive is the band's first studio album in three years -- an unusually long dry spell for these guys -- but with the five band members devoting their off time to solo projects and writing, it seems the break was a productive one. Like past releases such as Step Up to the Microphone and Love, Liberty, Disco, this new project neatly fuses edgy rock with accessible melodies for a progressive pop sound. But there's clearly more energy and guts here, and it's something that's been missing from Newsboys for years. It's a pleasure to once ...

Like past releases such as Step Up to the Microphone and Love, Liberty, Disco, this new project neatly fuses edgy rock with accessible melodies for a progressive pop sound. But there's clearly more energy and guts here, and it's something that's been missing from Newsboys for years. It's a pleasure to once again hear the vigorous vocals and fun guitar embellishment that first ushered Newsboys on the scene back in the early '90s. There's even a move toward greater lyrical depth on these ten tracks. Produced by Steve Taylor, who produced the band's earliest (and some say finest) releases, Thrive marks Newsboys' coming-of-age -- at last.
All Music Guide - Steven Douglas Losey
The Newsboys' ninth studio release is a conglomeration of rock, praise & worship, and power pop with more sharp hooks then a tackle box. The disc features a bevy of A-list studio vets. Christian pioneer Steve Taylor aided in lyrics and handled production. The release was mixed by Tom Lord-Alge Collective Soul, blink-182, Dave Matthews Band and mastering was done by Bob Ludwig of Bowie and Creed fame. Thrive is testimony to a band that has been Christian stalwarts for over ten years. Cuts like "Million Pieces" and "Thrive" are typical of the Top 40 gems that vocalist Peter Furler has written over the years. Each cut offers lyrical adoration and musical production that excels. As a band the Newsboys seemed to have matured over their past few releases. Musically the individual members fill their niches quite nicely, evidenced by cuts like the melancholy "It Is You." A Newsboys disc wouldn't be complete without straightforward rockers and tongue-in-cheek lyrical expressions, and "Cornelius" and "Lord I Don't Know" serve both counts. Thrive is a disc that utilizes the talents of some of the industry's best that is mixed with serviceable songs and significant performances that truly sparkle in substance and sound.

    Newsboys are Back

After a couple of years without releasing a new album (unless you count Shine: The Hits), the Newsboys are back and better than ever with their latest entitled ''Thrive.'' You'll find that the album has some of the old-school Newsboys flavor that you've grown accustomed to, but also has a great deal of new style to go along with it. The best tracks are ''Giving It Over,'' ''Million Pieces,'' and ''Cornelius.'' There are other good tracks as well, and I'm sure that every die-hard Newsboys fan can appreciate this album.
