Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Straub peaks with this visceral thriller, which completes his Blue Rose trilogy Koko ; Mystery . The citizens of Millhaven, Ill., thought they had overcome the unsolved serial murders that plagued the town in the 1940s--the killer had scrawled the words ``Blue Rose'' near the bodies--but another resident has just fallen prey to a new Blue Rose. The victim's husband, John Ransom, enlists the aid of Tim Underhill, a high school buddy and fellow Vietnam vet who has written a book about the murders. Although Tim thinks of his hometown as ``oddly interchangeable'' with Vietnam, he returns to join forces with famed local sleuth Tom Pasmore to solve both the earlier and the later murders. Tim's research and Tom's computer hacking connect the '40s killer to the St. Alwyns Hotel on Widow Street and suggest that the more recent killer is a victim of child abuse. Millhaven detectives nab a Jeffrey Dahmer-type murderer who claims to be the new Blue Rose, but Tim proves that the man is lying. As Tim and Tom close in on the truth, the trauma of Tim's Vietnam experiences pales and ``the other Vietnam''--his own childhood abuse--roars into memory. Painted from a darkly colorful palette, Straub's characters inhabit a razor-edged world of unremitting suspense. BOMC main selection. Apr.
Ray Olson
Straub brings back Tim Underhill from "Koko" (1988) and Tom Pasmore from "Mystery" (1989) and lets them solve another mighty problem in detection right in their mutual home town of Millhaven, Illinois. They're after either a serial killer who has resumed his bad old habits after a 40-year hiatus or--a hypothesis they eventually discover is correct--father-and-son psychokillers. If that sounds like pretty routine suspense stuff, well . . . it is. And at, say, 200 pages, it might make pretty good routine entertainment. But at 704 agonizingly detailed pages, some 675 of which come after killer-jr.'s identity has been revealed (killer-sr.'s long dead), it gets pretty old pretty quick. Straub's just-previous book, "Houses without Doors" , displayed a real genius for shapely, evocative short fiction, but here he falls back on his bad old novelistic habit of going on and on and on. Granted, he's a crackerjack realist, always remembering to have his personae put down everything they pick up. But his realism's all surface, there's no interiority in either characterization or setting. It's a Book-of-the-Month Club main selection, anyway.

    Throat....Trilogy?

First of all I wouldn't say it was a Trilogy at all. It had the same characters that were in the first book KoKo and the second Mystery. The first two books, I must say was great. Then we get to final book in this supposed "trilogy" and it was horrible. I wouldn't recommend this book for no one.

But I must say this before I end this review. I am a BIG PETER STRAUB FAN!!!! I just didn't like this book. It could have been written better.
