Overview

A “transformative,”* inspiring book with the power to change the way we understand and communicate with our dogs.

Few people are more qualified to speak about the abilities and potential of dogs than Jennifer Arnold, who for twenty years has trained service dogs for people with physical disabilities and special needs. Through her unique understanding of dogs’ intelligence, sensitivity, and extrasensory skills, Arnold has developed an exemplary training method that is based on kindness and encouragement rather than fear and submission, and her results are extraordinary.

To Jennifer Arnold, dogs are neither wolves in need of a pack leader nor babies in need of coddling; rather, they are extremely trusting beings attuned to their owners’ needs, and they aim to please. Stories from Arnold’s life and the lives of the dogs who were her greatest teachers provide convincing and compelling testimony to her choice teaching method and make Through a Dog’s Eyes an unforgettable book that will forever change your relationship with your dog.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

In hardcover, Through a Dog's Eyes became a word-of-mouth bestseller and there is no mystery why: Its author's attentiveness to humankind's best friends has been bred by decades of firsthand experience. For over twenty years, Canine Assistants founder Jennifer Arnold has been training service dogs for people with physical disabilities and special needs. During that period, Arnold has developed a training method based on teaching dogs to make choices, not simply follow commands. Her insights about canine intelligence and sensitivity will touch the heart of anyone who has ever shared the companionship of a lovable pooch. A reader favorite; now in paperback and NOOKbook.

From the Publisher
“A perfect balance of science and observation, this book . . . is a worthy tribute to our canine friends.”—Publishers Weekly

“Charming.”—The Washington Post

“Arnold’s voice is assertive with experience. . . . Her storehouse of anecdotal evidence is telling and entertaining, and her demolition of various alpha-model and negative reinforcement teaching techniques is thorough and lofty.”—Kirkus Reviews

“There can be no doubt Jennifer Arnold knows her stuff when it comes to training dogs.”—The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

“Vivid, memorable, moving . . . Jennifer Arnold provides a scientific argument for what dog lovers everywhere already know: Dogs love, dogs trust, dogs sense, dogs feel. This book’s message is simply the truth.”—Sara Gruen, author of Water for Elephants

A must for all dog lovers!

I learned so much about my dogs by reading this book. My wife loved the tender stories, but I loved the science behind them. Both of us will recommend this book to all our friends.

The Best Dog Training Book I Have Ever Read - Highly Recommended

Jennifer Arnold's stories and insight touched my heart. She put into beautiful words the way I have always felt about our special canine friends. There are specific instructions for various training situations in the appendix. I am an active volunteer at an animal shelter and work with all types of dog personalities. Kindness is key. I have been recommending this book to everyone I know. Enjoy, and spread the word!

    more from this reviewer

    Useful, insightful, helpful

I thought I knew a thing or two about dogs, having been a dog owner and lover all of my life. This book taught me more than I ever expected to learn, and it was written clearly and professionally, without any of the over-sentimentalizing one might come to expect in a book about dogs. Jennifer Arnold explains the reasons behind certain behaviors, thereby giving readers an opportunity to work with, rather than against, their dogs. Loved it, and the training tips at the end of the book were very helpful.

Wonderful story even if you aren't an animal person.

This is the best book. It opens your eyes to the potential that dogs have for understanding humans and their uncanny abilitites to respond to our needs...both physical and emotional. Everyone should read this.

    I TOLD YOU SO!

I want to firsr encourage everyone who do not have a dog to share their lives with to read this book immediately. I have had the priviledge of sharing the vast majority of my life with dogs and can verify all the stories we are told are correct. I have long known or suspected what we learned here but found myself unable to accurately communicate it. Fortunately Jennifer has the giftings and ability to do so. Her stories are heart warming or heart wrenching, but beautifully and accutately told. This book is so good that I just "pre-ordered" her new book due in October. Unfortunately I have recently become disabled with a rather painful form of Muscular Dystrophy and can verify everything we are taught as I have fortunately had the love, concern, caring and protection of my ever faithful companion who has loved me through this far more than any one else! This is a must read for everyone. Dog lovers or not, young and old alike. You will not be sorry, I promise you!

Good read helpful information in appendix

Informative if you never had a relationship with a dog. If you ever had a dog companion instead of a pet there is nothing you do not already know, heart touching stories. The last chapters and appendix helpful.

    Ridiculously Ridiculous

I had high hopes for this book based on the other reviews I read. Unfortunately, the author just annoys me to no end. In one chapter she berates the opinions of other known, respected dog handlers who clearly demonstrate an amazing, natural understanding of dogs. In the next, she tries to convince the reader that she shares a sort of psychic mind link with horses. The book does contain some enjoyable stories about the acute senses of dogs, experiences of dogs doing extraordinary things. But for the most part it's emotionally over-the-top syrupy reasoning that propels this author's style of writing. If I were a woman addicted to Danielle Steel books it might be just my cup of tea, but alas I'm not.

I had hoped this would be a thought provoking piece on service d

I had hoped this would be a thought provoking piece on service dogs and a look at the service dog handler bond. What I got was an author puffing herself up as a self proclaimed expert. This coupled with recent  pieces she has done promoting herself by trying to tear down well respected service dog programs and teams leaves an over all bad taste in my mouth. Spend your money elsewhere.

not "quite" what i expected per reviews....

but **it does look like a good read**. this came up as a title viewed by others looking at pet loss books. (i ret'd the book after a quick glance)

i give it 3 stars ONLY because i did not read it and cannot call it good, or bad.
