Overview

This space music album puts you under its spell with hypnotizing tones and great swirls of cosmic winds. After a mere two minutes of listening, the title already starts to make sense: Surf sounds and the cries of gulls take you to the proverbial beach, and crystalline shimmerings suggest a mirage of starlight. Sequenced patterns and a jaunty melody soon begin to develop, like some futuristic Andean melody played on crystal pan pipes. A dynamic tom tom drum erupts à la Tangerine Dream, and the piece swells with burgeoning layers of synth tones and gongs, only to phase back to the peaceful seaside scene. And that's only halfway through the title track! Verner's music provokes almost tangibly vivid visuals and transformative mindbends throughout. Tangy strings of sound pull against breathing pulses, leaving the listener stretched in the middle. The heralding drum and ancient trumpet of "Callings" seem to open a portal to an effervescent state of mind, giving way to effusive showers of sparkles and cosmic dolphin calls on "An Infinite Moment." Koto and guitar strumming suggest the sublime peace of an Eastern garden on "Within the Portals," with heartbeat bass notes that are incredibly centering. Verner's spacious steel string guitar licks are magnificent on "Of Essence," leaving you feeling as though you're inhaling an endless universe. Guest player Laraaji conjures enthralling zither swirls on the last two tracks, "Across the Abyss" and "As Dreams Sleep," and the album ends with the relaxing swoosh of waves upon the beach. A wonderful time is to be had by all.

All Music Guide - Jim Brenholts
J. Arif Verner is one of the most talented electronic minimalists in the U.S.A. Through the Timeless is the first Spotted Peccary release of the new millennium and it is a classic. Verner blends minimalism, space music, atmospheres, symphonic synths, and new age sensitivity to define a pure hybrid that is uniquely native to America. This CD absolutely caps the Spotted Peccary quest. "Pure hybrid" sounds like an oxymoron, but it is not. Verner makes this soundscape his own. By pulling those styles together he sets a new standard. That standard assures him a seat in the perpendicular universe. This CD will appeal to fans of Liquid Mind, Alpha Wave Movement, Constance Demby, Lisa Lynne, and Suzanne Ciani. It is an instant classic.
