Overview

Thug Kitchen started their wildly popular web site to inspire people to eat some Goddamn vegetables and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Beloved by Gwyneth Paltrow ("This might be my favorite thing ever") and named Saveur’s Best New Food blog of 2013--with half a million Facebook fans and counting--Thug Kitchen wants to show everyone how to take charge of their plates and cook up some real f*cking food.

Yeah, plenty of blogs and cookbooks preach about how to eat more kale, why ginger fights inflammation, and how to cook with microgreens and nettles. But they are dull or pretentious as hell--and most people can’t afford the hype.

Thug Kitchen lives in the real world. In their first cookbook, they’re throwing down more than 100 recipes for their best-loved meals, snacks, and sides for beginning cooks to home chefs. (Roasted Beer and Lime Cauliflower Tacos? Pumpkin Chili? Grilled Peach Salsa? Believe that sh*t.) Plus they’re going to arm you with all the info and techniques you need to shop on a budget and go and kick a bunch of ass on your own.

This book is an invitation to everyone who wants to do better to elevate their kitchen game. No more ketchup and pizza counting as vegetables. No more drive-thru lines. No more avoiding the produce corner of the supermarket. Sh*t is about to get real.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

If you haven't yet visited the award-winning Thug Kitchen food blog, let this be your last warning. The website keepers and their half million Facebook fans want you to know that eating healthy doesn't equal being prissy. We'll let the authors speak for themselves: "We've poured everything we can into this damn book and it's taking some time to get that sh*t right. We didn't want some half-ass book that looks like we just printed off a bunch of stuff from the site. Naw, we know you deserve better than that. So this book hits hard with 100 brand new, tasty as f*ck recipes that are guaranteed to elevate your kitchen game." Nuff said.

From the Publisher
"Dear reader, I love Thug Kitchen's cooking. As hilariously foul-mouthed as these motherf*ckers are, I really like their passion for eating the right food, for cutting to the chase, and for knocking up good, nutritious food from scratch. Their message is simple—stop relying on the microwave, stop relying on processed crap. Whoever you are and wherever you are, get down to the markets and supermarkets, use your budget to pick up some fresh ingredients, and get cooking. So, Thug Kitchen, good luck, and keep doing what you're doing."—Jamie Oliver

Love love love this book! While I'm not negan or paleo, it has great recipes and awesome easy to follow steps!
It encourages people to try new foods and even experiment with ingredients. Can't wait to start cooking. And yes the language can be offensive to some what that's what makes it humorous. Eat like you give a f***

This is a great book! The recipes are amazing and not overly complicated. Two groups I would not recommend this for, which you might guess from the
    reviews:

    1. People who are too uneducated to recognize that language is a social construct and there are no "good words" and "bad words." Stick to your Better Crocker pamphlets, tea party housewives.
    2. People who are too stupid to understand that the subtitle, "Eat Like You Give a F*ck" means that the recipes are going to be kind recipes.

Of the majority of the reviews that I am reading on this cookbook, most of them mention how funny it is, true, how good the recipes sound, true also. However, has anyone actually tried cooking the recipes? After all it is a cookbook. A friend of mine bought this book and we decided to try several of the recipes together. It was hit and miss, more miss than hit sadly. We had to track down the ingredients for some as they were not always readily available. Since the thugs live in the west coast area I am guessing these items easily available. These recipes are not for those who are in a hurry as they are mostly time consuming. Although my friend and I are both great cooks and he is a trained chef, we also wondered if they taste tested their  plates before posting the recipes,  many of the steps did not come out like described in the recipe. It still has some good idea for the vegan palate, but I'll pass on this one.

    Sophomoric

The book had some good recipes, but difficult to get through (or ignore) all the gratuitous and unnecessary cursing/swearing. I had no idea what this was, or that is was from a blog. I received it as a gift. It sounds like it was written by a disrespectful 13 year old with Tourette syndrome.

If you were aware of the blog and enjoyed it you will enjoy this book. If you have no idea who these people are, there are better vegetarian cook books that are not abrasive or belittling to the reader.

I'm mostly happy with this cookbook. It was a fun read (despite the generous splattering of swear words) and the recipes sound good. The only complaint -- the budget needed to actually make the recipes. A lot of the stuff isn't something you can purchase at your local grocer (maybe it's more suited for options available in bigger cities or the West Coast, but for a small-town girl on the East Coast, some of the ingredients just weren't happening). Also, some of the recipes, such as the pad thai, were majorly lacking in flavor. The cookbook made good on its promise of making vegetarian eating intriguing and filling, but fell flat by stubbornly sticking to organic snobbery that limits those without the means to get all the ingredients. Still, I recommend it!

    Easy, Straight-forward & Humorous

I initially only bought the cookbook to support Thug Kitchen. However, I was not aware it was a meat-free cookbook. Despite that, I've found that the recipes are good, ingredients are readily available in most supermarkets (there are a few things here and there that are not) and the book is downright funny, though not for those easily offended by swearing or cussing, i.e. F bombs, mo'fo, etc. in longform. I was not even close to being disappointed despite no meat included. A worthy addition to my manly collection of cookbooks. :)

This book absolutely lived up to the hype. I purchased it after following Thug Kitchen on Instagram and I'm so glad I did! The recipes are direct, creative, and absolutely delicious! It is truly unlike any cookbook I've ever owned in that it provides me with nourishing recipes while also making me feel like a total badass.

Healthy, Delicious Recipes and Hilarious Commentary

Everything I've made from this cookbook is delicious and nutritious. I love reading it too - these guys make cooking and eating healthy fun, easy & entertaining. I highly recommend! (Note: these are all vegan recipes. I am not vegan, but I love the recipes regardless. They are filling and I know they're good for me.)

    Real Food-Real Hilarious

I loved this cookbook! The very blunt, in your face approach to eating healthy is fantastic. There were blurbs in there regarding soy and other items that answered a lot of questions and laid to rest preconceived notions. The tone of the book really had me laughing as I read through it. And of course the recipes are totally delicious.

    Good recipes and entertaining reading

I would give a more detailed review had it not taken over a month to deliver
my book. If you are looking to decrease animal protein intake,
and not torture your taste buds, this is worth the investment. I'll most likely
buy from a local retailer from now on, however. It's not worth 2.00
to wait a month, as a club member no less.

Love the recipes, love the language even more.

I'm a total potty mouth, so I love the humor and foul language in the book. I also love that it's a vegan cookbook. I'm not vegan, but everyone once in a while, vegan soup or burritos really hit the spot.
