Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
This well-written tale of inspiration features Thumbelina, the world's smallest horse. The book consists of twenty-four pages divided into easy-to-understand, two-page spreads. Bright, cleverly-captioned photos complement the main text. Starred questions offer a wonderful opportunity for readers to discuss their own ideas and feelings. In addition, a map shows readers where Thumbelina lives and a section about "Radical Records" offers a fun way to learn about other world records. One spread, entitled "All about Minis," addresses basic attributes of miniature horses and provides specific information about their eyes, hoofs, ears, and teeth. Readers learn about Thumbelina's achievements, how she has overcome obstacles and what she does for others. As the other books in the "Inspiring Animals" series do, this book teaches by example how to cope with daily life and persevere when times are tough. Students will discover an easy art project for making a miniature horse at the back of the book. Curious readers will also find information about other sources for further research, a glossary and an index. This book will make an excellent addition to social studies and science lessons as well as lessons relating to tolerance and differences. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
