Overview

Third generation Texas Ranger Tyler Steele is the last of a dying breed-- a modern day cowboy hero living in a world that doesn't quite understand his powerful sense of right and wrong and instinct to defend those who can't defend themselves. Despite his strong moral compass, Ty has trouble seeing his greatest weakness. His hard outer shell, the one essential to his work, made him incapable of forging the emotional connection his wife Andie so desperately needed.

Now retired, rasing their son Brodie on his own, and at risk of losing his ranch, Ty does not know how to rebuild from the rubble of his life. The answer comes in the form of Samantha and her daughter Hope, on the run from a seemingly inescapable situation. They are in danger, desperate, and alone. Though they are strangers, Ty knows he can help-- protecting the innocent is what he does best. As his relationship with Sam and Hope unfolds, Ty realizes he must confront his true weaknesses if he wants to become the man he needs to be.

The Florida Times-Union
"Charles Martin is a sensitive fellow. He is also one hell of a writer. His latest book tells the story of a modern day Texas Ranger. It will have you cheering, and crying, of course."

"Thunder and Rain is one of the best books I have read in years....this book reads easy and Mr. Martin tells a story that grabs you from the first chapter and keeps you turning the pages. Before you know it, the book is almost done. This is the first of Martin's books I have read and now I'm a fan. If you like westerns, read the book. If you like action stories, read the book. If you're a fan of Texas or the mystique associated with the Texas Rangers, get the book. If you like a great story that culminates in the triumph of good over evil - yeah - get the book. Highly recommended, you won't be disappointed."

"Martin has an incredible gift for characterization and writing that tugs at the emotions without being overly melodramatic. This is the type of novel you will want to read quickly, because it is so engrossing, yet want to savor because the prose is meaningful and poignant."

Fresh from Thomas Nelson, where he racked up a bunch of New York Times best sellers and made a film deal for The Mountain Between Us, Martin offers the tale of former Texas Ranger Tyler Steele, who's committed to helping others but can't connect with his own wife. Now she's gone, but he has a chance to redeem himself when he meets on-the-run Samantha and her daughter. For anyone who likes good, strong, old-fashioned, right-or-wrong reads.

    Highly Recommended!

Charles Martin is a master at painting a picture with words! In each and every book, he draws the reader in and makes them feel as if they are right in the middle of the storyline, seeing everything through his eyes. His character development is amazing, as always. You feel as if you know the characters personally, inside and out, and I find myself not wanting to say goodbye as the book ends. They are down-to-earth, funny, and full of memorable one-liners. I discovered Charles Martin through his book, The Mountain Between Us, and then preceeded to read all of his other works. Thunder and Rain is my favorite thus far, and I now long to travel with my family to West Texas and look up Tyler Steele in the white pages! I read this book in less than two days, since I never can seem to put his books down once I start reading. With some books, it takes a few chapters to "get into" the book, but not with his - I'm sucked in after the first few vididly written pages and find it almost impossible to find a good stopping point. I am anxiously awaiting news that Thunder and Rain will be made into a major motion picture! It would be awesome! Thanks for another incredible book - I would recommend it to anyone!

Charles Martin's latest novel is a phenomenal book. The thing I

Charles Martin's latest novel is a phenomenal book. The thing I appreciate the most about his writing are the atmospheres he creates. You'll read this novel and feel like you're standing in the middle of a cattle ranch in Texas, breathing the air, kicking the rocks under your feet, and seeing the landscape all around. But in reality you'll be reading the pages laying in bed; all the while trying not to make eye contact with the alarm clock, lest you find yourself calculating the amount of sleep you're sacrificing for the sake of staying awake "just a bit longer" to see where the author takes you. Charles has a problem with keeping people awake. I'm thinking of organizing a class action suit against his publisher for those of us who've read his catalogue and developed sleep deprivation problems. He just won't turn you loose. Every single one of his previous 7 novels have landed me at work, MANY a morning, exhausted because I couldn't put the book down the night before.

And this one is no exception. The pacing of the story is spot on. There are no lulls, no filler, no long rabbit trails to fill the pages. Every word of this book serves a purpose, and he has help me to set my own personal landspeed record for reading books quickly. You won't be able to put Thunder and Rain down. I highly recommend it to anyone. I also recommend his entire catalogue. He's a great artist, and I feel like he's nearing the tipping point where the world catches on, and nudges him to the top of the New York Times best sellers list. This book just may put him a few leaps and bounds up the ladder. Pick it up. Tell people about it. That is, if you want the credibility of saying you knew about him before everyone else caught on. :)

    Amazing!!!

"Unbelievable!! I just finished Thunder & Rain (could not put it down, as picked it up this weekend, and had to get up early on Sunday to finish it before going to church)....it was AMAZING! I have read all Charles Martin's books and each time, not sure how they can get better; however, each one is as good as the last in a unique way. Charles, you have a God-given talent and with your words speak to many - You fall in love with the characters, especially with Hope and her letters to God, Sam, Brodie, Dumps; however, my favorite is Cowboy! A little Clint Eastwood and John Wayne - I hope to see a movie based on this book and can see a sequel to continue the story of the next generation with Hope and Brodie's life. Thank you for your writing and bringing joy to your fans and readers. Now, I cannot wait for the next one!!!! Thunder & Rain is a must read for all ages -women or men!"

Reviewed by Anne B. for Readers Favorite

Move over Walker; there’s a new Texas Ranger hero in town. I have always been a romantic at heart, especially when it comes to Texas Rangers. They are true heroes with a thankless job. While listening to "Thunder and Rain" I had to keep reminding myself that Tyler Steele is a character in a book and not a real person. Retired Texas Ranger, Tyler Steele, carries a heavy burden; he has a ten year old son, a wife who is an addict, and a cart load of debt. Steele was driving home one night when he ran into a car stalled in the middle of the road. Inside he found a hamster, a woman and a girl. They were dirty, down on their luck and on the run from an evil officer of the law. Their situation was hopeless. Steele offered them his protection.

Charles Martin is quite a writer! He managed to combine romance, action, drama, and danger all in one book. Usually romance is written from the point of view of the female lead. That is what makes this book unique; the plot is told from the perspective of Texas Ranger Tyler Steele and Hope, a ten year old girl. The narrative moves back and forth between Tyler and Hope. Another unique feature in this book is Hope’s narrative; it is written as a journal or letter to God. Her words are from the heart and written in a conversational manner. This is my kind of book! I am not familiar with the art of Charles Martin but he now goes to the top of my 'to watch for' list. This review is of the audio format in which the readers are Daniel May and Luci Christian Bell. Their voices brought Steele and Hope to life and they marched off the CD and into my heart.

Another great story from Charles Martin

Martin takes a bit of a departure from his other novels as this one deals with a bit more dicey topics, but he still crafts a wonderful story with characters we all long to be more like.

"Anycat home?" Sundrop calls into the gloom. She could see the camp had been used by many cats, but empty now. "Empty." Her head sagged in weariness and disappointment. "I guess I'll stay here until I pick up their scent trail again." She pads away.
