Thunder and Roses

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David McGee
Pam Tillis always delivers interesting albums, but Thunder and Roses is another story altogether. In a collection of songs that looks at love less in the heat of the moment than in afterglow, Tillis uses her impressive command of nuance and phrasing to lend each song the feel of having been cut from harsh experience in the real world. "Which Five Years" uses gently rocking instrumental support to frame a compelling question: What you would give up in experience if it were possible to travel back in time and do it all over again? The answer isn't easy. The acoustic-driven pop gem "Off-White," which Tillis cowrote, looks at love the second time around in the realistic terms of someone who knows how the game is played. A soaring, inspirational ballad with her dad, the legendary Mel Tillis, closes the album on a positive note, urging an aggressive approach to realizing our dreams. Mel gives the message gravitas. Pam says, Yeah, I got it, Dad. And you know she has -- loud and clear.
All Music Guide - Maria Konicki Dinoia
The Tillis name is a staple in country music. Pam's dad, Mel Tillis, has graced country since the '50s, and Pam's been in the business since prior to 1979 either as a songwriter, backup singer, or club performer. She hasn't had a big career or even an exceptionally huge hit, but she has maintained a consistent career by keeping herself on the charts with songs like "Maybe It Was Memphis" and "All the Good Ones Are Gone." She continues her consistency on this 11-track collection of respectable, just-decent songs. Album number seven doesn't really offer anything new in terms of what you usually get from Pam, except for a first-time duet together with dad Mel. The bonus track, "Waiting on the Wind," is a thoroughly likable rendition of a song they've previously performed live together. "Jagged Hearts," the album's first track is also worth a mention. Thunder and Roses would make a fine addition to your Pam Tillis collection.
