Overview

Best friends Tamanna and Yasmine cannot believe their good fortune when a school is set up in their Afghan village; however, their dreams for the future are shattered when the Taliban burns down the school and threatens the teacher and students with death.

As Tamanna faces an arranged marriage to an older man, and the Taliban targets Yasmine’s western-educated family, the girls realize they must flee. Traveling through the heart of Taliban territory, the two unaccompanied young women find themselves in mortal danger. After suffering grave injuries—Tamanna from a fall and Yasmine from a suicide bombing—the girls are left without the one thing that has helped them survive—each other.

Filled with tension and drama, THUNDER OVER KANDAHAR paints a vivid portrait of the perils of contemporary Afghanistan.

Though written by a young adult author, this book is one which EVERYBODY should read. It helps us learn more about life in Afghanistan through the true story of a young Hindu girl, Yasmine. Written by an award winning young adult author, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. I became so locked into the book that, as a teacher, my students walked into my classroom, and I didn't even know they were there at first. Good thing we have an AR reading time. After I got the students situated, they read their books and I read more of mine. Riveting, compelling, and action filled, it helps anybody who reads this book truly learn about the culture through a fascinating story of a young girl (and her friend) who wind up having to come face to face with danger countless times while trying to leave the country. Read it! I'm sure you'll love it, too!!
