Overview

James Bond goes under the sea to find his man, and composer John Barry obliges with an aquatically cool yet subtly powerful soundtrack. Barry made his first big mark with an equally wonderful backdrop to Bond's earlier From Russia With Love and Goldfinger adventures. It had been Barry's intent to give Shirley Bassey -- who'd scored big with "Goldfinger" -- a second go-around with a Bond movie song, but the producers' decision to change the song resulted in Tom Jones getting the title song, devised by Barry at the last moment. He lends the "Thunderball" vocal theme a well-gauged mix of pelvic thrust and serious drama. The rest of the set -- including another update of the "007" theme and an instrumental take on what was originally to be the vocal feature, "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" -- is all pure ingenuity and layered drama. To a lot of people, it was all a little too drenched in reverb and a little too much of the same music repeated; this may have been a result of the fact that Barry was so late finishing the score, that only music from the first half of the movie was represented on the soundtrack LP. In February of 2003, EMI issued a remastered version of Thunderball with 35 minutes of extra music on it, all material that was left off of the original -- the upgrade is the first true soundtrack of Thunderball, filled with some of Barry's most subtle and atmospheric music, and making it the most accomplished of the early Bond music scores. ~ Bruce Eder & Stephen Cook

It's hard to find good music that captures the lonely suspended feeling of the underwater world, but this album does so very well, especially on ''The Spa'' and ''Bond Below Disco Volante.'' The film and album have about 5-6 leitmotives and themes that reoccur repeatedly, so you'll find the same melodies on different tracks in different guises, e.g., ''Cafe Martinique'' is a dinner music version of ''Death of Fiona,'' ''Thunderball'' (#2) is a background music version of the title song ''Thunderball'' (#1). There is some terrific compositional skills displayed here, such as in ''Death of Fiona'' that has such a catchy melody but such an unusual chord progression (Em Fm Bb ...). In the film, many of the complete tracks here are fragmented and scattered out of order, some don't appear at all, and film music exists that is not on the album. ''Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang'' on the album never appears in the film at all, and some music in the film never appears on the album, e.g.: from the underwater lovemaking scene, the first strummed guitar piece the King Erisson band plays, the fast flute theme in the ending hydrofoil battle, the ''007 Theme'' during the ending lifeboat rescue via sky hook, etc. The title song has some pretty stupid lyrics (''his needs are more so he gives less''?), but the melody is fine. Two versions of the vinyl album exist, one American, one British, with different versions of ''Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.'' As I'm just now ordering the CD, I haven't found out which version they chose for the CD, though I'm disappointed they didn't bother to include both. This is music you'll enjoy if you're a scuba diver.
