Overview

This package brings together Joni James' debut and follow-up foreign-language albums for MGM. Ti Voglio Bene, the first of these, was her salute to her Italian roots, dedicated to her father. The homework she put into this project shows off beautifully on the 12 tracks (James uses three different dialects when singing, exhibiting a mastery of the material). The same applies to her follow-up project, an album of French music on which she spent months researching. Although James interjects so little of her trademarked vocal licks from her pop successes into the mix, she sounds every bit as home on tunes like "Santa Lucia," "Non Dimenticar," "April In Paris" and "La Vie En Rose" as she does on any of her better-known material. Theses are concepts that not only work, but actually triumph in their scope and breadth.
