Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
Tiana, Disney's latest princess, is the focus of this small tome for newly independent readers. All her life Tiana has dreamed of owning a restaurant in her native New Orleans and the night for the grand opening is finally upon her. Everything must be perfect for Jono La Creme, the food critic, intends to come to the opening. From the beginning things go wrong. Louis, the gator, cannot find his horn and won't be able to play his upbeat jazz. When the freshly baked beignets fall on the floor, Tiana fears there will not be time to make a fresh batch and she worries that her gumbo will not be up to expectations. Just before the guests arrive there is a power outage and Tiana must rely on candles for the ambiance. With the help of her husband, Prince Naveen, friend Charlotte, and her own belief in wishing upon a star, Tiana's opening is a great success. There are no surprises in this simple and happy ever after plot and the illustrations scattered throughout are pure Disney. The vocabulary and structure require at least a 3rd grade reading ability but it can be read aloud to a much younger audience. The price is rather steep considering the slight content.
