A Gimmick, But Attractive and Well-Done

Like his previous package on Tibetan prayer flags, Tad Wise's gallery of pop-up altars is short on text but long on striking, brilliant visuals. (Actually, Wise is credited only with the 'concept,' with the text and illustrations provided by Robert Beer and the pop-up designs engineered by David Carter.)

The pop-ups are well-done, and come up erect and in perfect alignment. The art is traditional Tibetan iconography of some of the most popular Tibetan 'deities' - Green Tara, Manjushri, Shakyamuni Buddha, Medicine Buddha, and Avalokiteshvara. Each image is accompanied by the deity's mantra and a brief description of the deity's psycho-spiritual meaning in Tibetan Buddhism. The pop-ups are contained in an altar box and fold down neatly on top of one another when not in use. The desired image is kept in place by means of small, inconspicuous elastic loops.

While admittedly a bit of a gimmick, this is an attractive package that can be used as a travel altar for meditation. It would make an attractive gift for anyone new to Tibetan Buddhism, and perhaps even for an experienced meditator.
