Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Rabbit tries to fall asleep but he keeps being disturbed, first by the sound of the clock, then by the dripping tap. Each time a noise disturbs him, his friend Mole gets up to silence the offending noisemaker. Mole stops the clock and he quiets the drip. When Rabbit can't sleep because the cat is purring, Mole gets up and takes the cat downstairs. Nearly losing his patience, Mole next closes the garden gate that had been banging in the wind. Finally, Rabbit falls asleep. Relieved, Mole lies in his bed trying to sleep, only to be kept awake by Rabbit's snoring. Mole trudges downstairs to "sleep with the cat," whose gentle purring does not keep Mole awake at all. This cozy bedtime tale of friendship, care, and sacrifice will warm readers' hearts. Soft, whimsical colored pencil and watercolor illustrations will envelope the reader with the same comforting feeling as the text. 2004, Bloomsbury USA Children's Books, Ages 3 to 7.

PreS-K-Mole and Rabbit are settling in for a good night's sleep when Rabbit declares that he is being disturbed by the tick-tock he hears. Mole gets out of bed and stops the clock, and the two animals plump their pillows and try to get comfy once again. But now the faucet is going "drip-drop, drip-drop." Again Mole patiently leaves his warm bed and turns off the tap. One by one, noises are eliminated as Mole removes the purring cat and tries to fasten the banging garden gate. Finally, all is quiet and the two try to fall asleep again. Rabbit has no trouble drifting off, but his loud snores keep his friend awake. Mole then takes his blanket and pillow and heads down the stairs where he snuggles into an armchair with the softly purring cat, in front of a warm fireplace. Taylor's charming watercolors have a cozy and homey feel. The animals' underground burrow is spacious, light, and full of creature comforts such as fuzzy slippers and soft area rugs. The rhythmic language, repetition of phrases, and cumulative sound effects all add up to one very satisfying bedtime story.-Wendy Woodfill, Hennepin County Library, Minnetonka, MN Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Rabbit and Mole are roommates who share a cozy underground home in this delightful bedtime story with a cacophony of cumulative sound effects. Rabbit keeps hearing noises (a ticking clock, a dripping faucet, a purring cat, and a banging gate) that prevent him from falling asleep, but Mole patiently gets up from his own bed and solves each problem in turn, until he can't fall asleep himself due to Rabbit's snoring. Each obstacle has its own special sound effect, repeated in turn by both characters until Mole falls asleep with the purring cat in front of the cozy fireplace. Taylor's loose watercolor illustrations show lots of clever details in the well-appointed home, and she creates engaging personalities for the two animal characters. Polished prose, rhythmic and repeated sound effects, and amusing and appealing illustrations add up to satisfying whole that will be enjoyed as a bedtime story for preschoolers and as a read-aloud in story hours with bedtime or noise themes. Simply adorable

The illustrations are cute and imaginative. The writing is rhythmic, repetitive and wonderfully soporific.

    A FUN BEDTIME STORY

Rabbits and moles need sleep, too! But, that's not easy for this pair of best friends who live together. After they've retired for the night Rabbit tosses and turns because the ticking of the clock is keeping him awake. Thoughtful Mole remedies that by stopping the clock. Still no dreamland for Rabbit as now the drip-drip of a drippy faucet is keeping him awake. Mole to the rescue again - he turns off the water. Still no rest for the weary as then the purring of their red cat keeps Rabbit awake, so good hearted Mole puts the cat downstairs. Wouldn't you know? There's something else keeping Rabbit awake - it's the banging of the garden gate. Of course, Mole braves the cold to secure the garden gate. At last, Rabbit falls fast asleep. Wouldn't you think that Mole's good deeds would be rewarded? Not at all. Rabbit snores so loudly that Mole can't sleep. Ask your young ones to guess what Mole will do now.
