Meet the Author

James Patterson
James Patterson

James Patterson has had more New York Times bestsellers than any other writer, ever, according to Guinness World Records. Since his first novel won the Edgar Award in 1977, James Patterson's books have sold more than 210 million copies. He is the author of the Alex Cross novels, the most popular detective series of the past twenty-five years, including Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider. Mr. Patterson also writes the bestselling Women's Murder Club novels, set in San Francisco, and the top-selling New York detective series of all time, featuring Detective Michael Bennett. He writes full-time and lives in Florida with his family.

Michael Ledwidge is the author of The Narrowback, Bad Connection, and most recently, the coauthor, with James Patterson, of The Quickie, Step on a Crack, Run For Your Life, and Worst Case.

Biography

James Patterson had been working as a very successful advertising copywriter when he decided to put his Masters degree in English to a somewhat different use. Inspired by bestselling hair-raising thrillers like The Day of the Jackal and The Exorcist, Patterson went to work on his first novel. Published in 1976, The Thomas Berryman Number established him as a writer of tightly constructed mysteries that move forward with the velocity of a bullet. For his startling debut, Patterson was awarded the prestigious Edgar Award for Best First Mystery Novel—an auspicious beginning to one of the most successful careers in publishing.

A string of gripping standalone mysteries followed, but it was the 1992 release of Along Came a Spider that elevated Patterson to superstar status. Introducing Alex Cross, a brilliant black police detective/forensic psychologist, the novel was the first installment in a series of bestselling thrillers that has proved to be a cash cow for the author and his publisher.

Examining Patterson's track record, it's obvious that he believes one good series deserves another…maybe even a third! In 2001, he debuted the Women's Murder Club with 1st to Die, a fast-paced thriller featuring four female crime fighters living in San Francisco—a homicide detective, a medical examiner, an assistant D.A., and a cub reporter. The successful series has continued with other numerically titled installments. Then, spinning off a set of characters from a previous novel (1998's When the Wind Blows), in 2005 he published Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment. Featuring a "flock" of genetically engineered flying children, the novel was a huge hit, especially with teen readers, and spawned a series of vastly popular fantasy adventures.

In addition to continuing his bestselling literary franchises, Patterson has also found time to co-author thrillers with other writers—including Peter de Jonge, Andrew Gross, Maxine Paetro, and Howard Roughan—and has even ventured into romance (Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas, Sam's Letters to Jennifer) and children's literature (santaKid). Writing at an astonishing pace, this prolific author has turned himself into a one-man publishing juggernaut, fulfilling his clearly stated ambition to become "the king of the page-turners."

Good To Know

Patterson's Suzanne's Diary For Nicholas was inspired by a diary his wife kept that tracked the development of their toddler son.

Two of Patterson's Alex Cross mysteries (Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls) have been turned into films starring Morgan Freeman; in 2007, a weekly television series premiered, based on the bestselling Women's Murder Club novels.

    Tick Tock

Michael Bennett now has to deal with a serial killer that is recreated serial killers from New York's past. All in the name of Lawrence. Now who the hell is Lawrence? While this is going on, Bennett is also trying to enjoy a peaceful vacation with his children. And to add to that he may or may not be romancing two women. So much going on in this fourth Michael Bennett story that it kept me turning page after page. It was a fast paced novel and a quick read but it didn't grab me and hold on and was quickly forgotten when I opened my next book to read.

James Patterson is one of my favorite authors because he never lets me down. Tick Tock blew me away! I read it in one day because I could not put it down. Michael Bennett is the perfect hero and this book had one of the best plots ever. If you're a James Patterson fan or if you have never read any of his books, you need to! Five stars!

Edge of Your Seat Thrill Ride From The First Page!

NYPD's # 1 Detective Michael Bennett has a huge problem. Someone is planning and masterminding a crime spree in New York like never before. They are conducting copy cat crimes of some of worst America has every seen, the Son of Sam, the Werewolf of Wysteria, Mad Bomber, just to name a few. Not only that but it's not some crazy terriorist act plaguing New York again, but an intelligent, rich and ex military that is calculating everything down to the last detail and filming it all.

Caught in the midst of his vacation with his ten adopted kids in Breezy Point, Michael Bennett's love life is also caught in a web of confusion and chaos. Even while the crime spree in New York is spiraling out of control and terrorizing it's citizens, racial tension is running high against Michael's own adoptive children.

Will he be able to catch the killer or will Michael Bennett, himself, become the star of his very own crime reenactment?

I received James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge's latest novel, Tick Tock, compliments of Hachette Book Groups and Little, Brown and Company for my honest review and once more, never disappointed. Caught up in the page by page action and wondering just who the killer is and what the next crime would be, I was held captive myself until I finished the final page holding my breath. This one is a 5 star thriller!

    Veryq disappointed !!!!

Hated this book !! Michael was made out to be a wise cracking, insensitive horn dog who was more concerned about who he should go to bed with!!! His character was totally changed from the widowed smart single parent portrayed in the other book . Then to top it off the story line was just corny. Not sure if i will ever read the next book in this series. Veery disappointed!!!

    Disappointing Read

This is the fourth installment in the series about New York Detective Michael Bennett. I enjoyed all the previous installments, but this one just wasn't as good.

What I liked about the book: As with most Patterson books there was a lot of action. It was certainly a thrilling story with quick pacing (of course with short chapters, quick pacing is almost guaranteed.)

What I didn't like about the book: Michael Bennett. This took me by surprise. After having read the previous books about Bennett, I had added him to my list of favorite detectives. After reading Tick Tock - I'm not so sure. He spent too much time obsessing about his love life in this book. It distracted from the story rather than adding to it. Bennett's character was not as well developed in this book as in the past installments. He seemed rather flat.

If you are a diehard Patterson fan then you will probably enjoy this book. If you really like the character Michael Bennett, you might want to skip this one and wait to see if he gets back on track in the next book.

    Page turner......

Perfectly balanced between mystery & intrigue. With just enough in site into Michael Bennets character to let you feel connected to his personal life as well. When those two things come together it is explosive and stays that way until the very last page!

Reviewed by Anne B. for Readers Favorite

James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge team up for "Tick Tock". In my humble opinion "Tick Tock" is one of their best! This is the review of the unabridged audio book.

Detective Michael Bennett returns to the thrill of his fans. Bennett is a widowed father to ten children. He, his children, the nanny, Mary Catherine, and his grandfather, Father Seamus, are on a much needed vacation, when Bennett is called back on a case. A horrendous evil villain is committing crimes and leaving letters for Bennett. The plot moves back and forth from attempting to deal with family matters and romance to finding a murderer. Detective Michael Bennett expressed love for his children. I found him to be an amazingly well-developed character. I loved the romantic scenes. Poor guy is kind of slow when it comes to romance. Someone needs to give him pointers on how to tell when a woman is interested. The scene with the family of bullies was wonderful. Wouldn’t we all like to do that at one time or another?

Mary Catharine must be a wonder woman. She managed to work on her Master’s Degree, take care of a family with 10 children and still catch the eye of Bennett. I guess she was super organized. It was easy to picture her in my mind’s eye, an Irish redhead with green eyes. Father Seamus was humorous and lovable. The old goat loved his family and practiced the old fashioned methods of handling problems. I found myself smiling as I read some of his comments. He proves that Christians do not always have to be meek or wimpy.

The plot is a short 28 chapters; I could have listened much longer. This book is well-written, fast paced, action packed and a real thriller. The ending is a bit surprising. The reader is great; he manages to capture just the right tone. Check this one out you; will be glad you did.

    Could be better.

This was a good book, but not one of my favorites. I was getting annoyed with the back and forth love twist that was immature. The ended seemed to have an abrupt ending. But did enjoy the twist of Apts.

    I Highly Recommend This Book

I not only highly recommend this book, but the entire "Michael Bennet Series". Each book adds to a well-written chronology & keeps you hungering for more. Michael Bennett seems likely to become my favorite detective of the thriller genre. He is so appealing & down-to-earth. His large family cast of characters is endearing & makes him feel more like a welcome neighbor than a protagonist in a work of fiction. I'm ready for the next installment.

I've read all 4 books in the series. Vey quick/easy and enjoyable read. However you would need to read the other 3 before jumping into this one, else you'll miss a lot of the nuances. Worth checking out, can't wait for the next one.
