Overview

Don't miss Tidal, the spellbinding third book in the Watersong series by New York Times bestselling author Amanda Hocking!

Gemma and Harper Fisher are facing the fight of their lives.  Gemma has been cursed with extraordinary powers that have a terrifying dark side, but she’s finally found what she needs—a way to break the curse and become human again.  But finding the means to do it will be her greatest challenge yet.  And now Penn, Lexi and Thea—the gorgeous but deadly creatures who cursed her—are determined to kill her before she has a chance.  Making matters worse, Penn has her sights set on Daniel—the guy Harper loves—and Penn always gets what she wants.

As Gemma and Harper race to break the curse before it’s too late, they’re thrust deeper into a mythical world of immortal secrets.  They must delve into their enemies’ past to find the answers they need, even if it means being drawn deeper into their savagely beautiful world.  But one of the girls is not what she seems…and Gemma finds an unlikely ally as she struggles to save herself.  But will it be enough to break an ancient curse that no one has ever escaped alive?

VOYA - Heather Christensen
Fans will be thrilled to get their hands on the latest in this series about mermaid mean girls (aka sirens). Now that Gemma has learned more about the bloodthirsty habits of her new clique, she and her sister, Harper, are doing their best to figure out a way to end the curse. Harper's friend Marcy introduces them to a bookseller who specializes in mythical creatures, and from her they learn that the specifics of the curse are written on a scroll carefully guarded by the chief siren, Penn. Destruction of that scroll will mean not only the end of the curse but also the end of the sirens, something Penn's sister, Thea, will do anything to prevent. Meanwhile, Penn sets her sights on Harper's boyfriend, Daniel, trapping him in a bargain that is sure to haunt him in the future. Hocking's use of alternating viewpoints not only gives insight on the involvement of the different humans but also provides valuable clues about the history of the sirens and their place in Greek mythology. While there is plenty of intrigue, it often feels as if external forces move the plot forward rather than the internal drive or motivation of the characters. Nevertheless, teens looking for a quick, easy read will enjoy escaping into this steamy, suspenseful story. A cliff-hanger ending will leave readers eagerly awaiting the conclusion to this popular series. Reviewer: Heather Christensen
Kirkus Reviews
It's a race against the clock for 16-year-old Gemma in the third installment of the Watersong series. Still desperate to stave off her thirst for a beating heart (preferably one belonging to a hot teenage boy) and to protect the ones she loves from the wrath of her evil siren sisters, Gemma must figure out how to break the siren curse before Penn finds a more suitable and willing replacement and kills Gemma herself. If only it were as exciting as that all sounds. The aptly titled novel ebbs and flows between present and a mythical past in a failed attempt to anchor the story and the characters in a history that may or may not be destined to repeat itself. While Penn is still deliciously evil, and her love-hate relationship with Daniel remains one of the best parts of the series, most of the characters feel two-dimensional at best. Others, including Lexi and Alex, who are absent for the bulk of the novel, feel like afterthoughts. As for the plotlines, far too little time is spent on Penn's search for a replacement siren and too much time spent digging around in the sirens' past. The result is that the urgency of Gemma's situation is given good lip service, but readers will be hard-pressed to actually feel it. There are plenty of other (and far better) fish in the sea. (Paranormal romance. 14 & up)
