Overview

Sure, you can pick up the immortal Gipsy Kings 1998 album that bamboleoed all over the charts for much of that year and had most of the world sounding a little bit like the French Riviera at 2 a.m. You would do equally well to purchase The Best of the Gipsy Kings for the same essential songs and its pulse-pounding medley finale. But Tierra Gitana gets to the fundamentals of the Gipsy disco/rumba phenomenon and is easily the Kings' most sophisticated work. "Understated" isn't the first word that comes to mind when describing this furiously strumming flamenco family, but this excellent album is nuanced, restrained, and evocative. Tonino Baliardo's lead playing is outstanding on the instrumental "Estrellas," and "Los Peces en el Rio" handily tops the Kings' big hits for sheer passionate intensity. Please your party guests with "Bamboleo," but don't stint yourself -- Tierra Gitana is first-class Mediterranean soul music.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Steve McMullen
Anyone familiar with the Gipsy Kings' unique sound will find no surprises on Tierra Gitana, their eighth album of original material. All the trademarks are here: the flamenco guitar, the staccato handclaps, the soaring vocals, all set to Latin rhythms. This album has a very relaxed feel; it is pleasant but not very engaging. There is nothing on this disc as immediately accessible as some of the group's earlier successes, like "Bamboleo" or "Baila Me," and for that reason this one isn't recommended for newcomers. Start with The Best Of, then, if you want to buy this, you'll know exactly what you're getting.
