From soup, fish, meat, salad, and desert course to fingerbowls we find manners written especially for boys, although girls are also pictured. "The soup spoon is held in the right hand with the thumb on top." It is not held like a "mashie niblick." The picture helps. Food is shown mashed on the back of the fork in the European manor. "Asparagus is eaten with the fingers, unless stalks are too long." Obviously this book does not expect asparagus to be cooked until limp. "Don't talk with your mouth full. Some of your lunch might fall out." Eating corn on the cob with handles is not recommended. "When the table ?turns,' don't get left staring into space." Rather, try to attract the attention of the girl at your side who should be turned to you. Clever line drawings illustrate the spare text and add humor. This is a Fiftieth-Anniversary Edition. Ah, to have manners once again. Once upon a time, teenagers - as well as adults - had completely perfect manners at the dinner table. Now, there seems to not only be a lack of manners in the world, but the concept of the 'dinner table' has also disappeared. In this fantastic re-release of a book that, fifty years ago, spoke about the necessity to keep your elbows off the table, which fork to use for each course, and other gems of wisdom, teenagers can have a clear, concise look at how the world used to be. Although some will say that this book, or this type of book, is no longer necessary, they would be absolutely wrong. In this world where English conversation has become, "How r u?"; and laughter has become LOL, there is nothing more important than taking the time to bring back the age of class, manners, and appropriate behavior. In that world, fifty years ago, there were also things wrong in life. There was the Great Depression, Prohibition, Mobsters, War - all kinds of interesting news reels would pop up in front of the feature film in the local movie theatres. But there was no talk of terrorists, drug-addled teenagers, killing in the streets, gang wars, and the internet did not run everyone's life. It also wasn't the accepted form of communication between people. This was a time that reminds everyone of getting dressed up for dinner and sitting around the table with family, talking to the children as people discussed their day and how the schoolwork was going. Every evening enjoying life as a family, as they planned for their futures. Yes, this re-release means far more than just what fork to use during the salad course, it means bringing back a time that we never should have lost in the first place. The chapters are concise and witty, told by a man who ran the most 'classy' establishment that still exists today - Tiffany & Co.; with illustrations by a prominent fashion artist whose work appeared in many publications, from Harper's Bazaar to Vogue. My grandmother, a very proper woman of class and grace, was taking me to Nice, France for a 2 week summer visit when I was 16. We were staying at a beautiful resort, visting the JVC Jazz festival, as well as be entertained by her friends there who were going to prepare a 6 course evening in our honor. My birthday is in March, so although I wanted a car, I received this book, with the exclamation 'You will not embarrass me while in France!' and I was instructed to read and learn. What an education! I have digested this little gem of a book over and over and began my quest to master the manners of a true gentleman. Thanks grandmommie!

This 90 pages little book fills with lots of illustrations to depict the improper & proper table manners. Despite the title of the book is 'For Teenagers', this book can be appreciated for anyone who wants to master the art of good table manners. Mr. Hoving, the former chairman of the board of Tiffany & Company, will walk you through the proper table manners in a step-by-step approach. He will also address alot of common mistakes and 'don't' in numbers of illustrations; for example, don't leave your spoon in your coffee cup! This book covers different meal courses like the soup course, the fish course, the meat course, the salad course, as well as the dessert course. Overall, I find this book is very interesting and helpful. I highly recommend for people looking for a quick and easy way to learn good table manners. (Reviewed by Otto Yuen, 5-Nov-2004)

I read this book for the first time when I was eight years old. It is the premier book on table manners. I suggest every teen (really anyone) read this book, it will save you from being yelled at by your grandmother.

This book is a MUST have for all kids. I do not have children, however I think that all the advice given in this book are also great for adults.

I chose this book out of all of the books at the bookstore and I read it when I was 14. Now I am 17 and am a very neat, tidy, cleaned up, and well adjusted young woman.
