Overview

This is the true story of Nasira, Anjika, and Sidani, three white Bengal tiger cubs whose mother stopped nursing them only fifteen hours after their birth. Luckily, two zookeepers, Tom and Allie Harvey, were keeping a close eye on them.

The Harveys paired the hungry cubs with their golden retriever, Isabella—who was still nursing her own puppy—to see if Isabella would feed and care for the baby tigers. The match was a success: Isabella immediately adopted the cubs as if they were her very own . . . Tiger Pups! This sensational story swept the country, and Isabella and the tiger pups have become the darlings of the media.

Captured in adorable, intimate, and exclusive images by Tom Harvey and National Geographic photographer Keith Philpott, here is the fascinating story of the cubs and how they make the transition from living in the house with the Harveys to their new den outdoors. At two months, the cubs are active, curious, and playful. They get into everything! Share in this remarkable and heartwarming story that marks a truce in the age-old battle between cats and dogs.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
This true story begins at a zoo in Kansas when three Bengal tiger cubs are born. Their mother stops nursing them shortly after their birth. The zookeepers take the cubs home, and the cubs bond with their golden retriever who has recently given birth. She lets them nurse like they were her own puppies. Many photographs show the dog and the tigers together as the cubs play and grow. Short text describes the tigers' progress as they explore their world and develop distinctive personalities. Candid photos show the tigers playing in the grass and inside the house, and other adorable photos show them taking a bath and sleeping with the golden retriever. When the cubs are eleven weeks old, they are too big to stay inside the house, and they need to move outdoors. The text ends with an appropriate comment that the cubs will grow up, but the tigers will remember the dog and all the people who took care of them. The pleasant narrative and endearing photos will be appealing to all young readers. Reviewer: Vicki Foote

K-Gr 2—The authors, who own Safari Zoological Park in Kansas, present a personal look at raising three baby white tigers, taking them into their home after the cubs were abandoned by their mother. The book ends with the 11-week-old cubs moving outdoors. The sharp, full-color photos and straightforward text represent a memoir of the daily life of these animals and the Harveys' family dogs, one of whom nurses the cubs and treats them like her pups. The style is clear but short and lacks originality, and the oversimplification of the care and needs of wild animals can be misleading to young readers. There is not much depth to this picture book, but young animal lovers should enjoy the story.—Valerie Scott-Dixon, Sherwood Forest Media Center, Norfolk, VA
