Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Put the words, "tiger" and "shark" together and you have one amazing animal by implication alone! This book, part of the "Shark Zone" series, provides an introduction to a fish that lives up to its name. Although Nuzzolo doesn't specifically say so, the fish's black spots and vertical stripes (they fade as the shark ages) are probably one link to the land predator. A Tiger shark's hunting skills match the big cat's as well. They take on dolphins, sea turtles (their teeth can crack a turtle shell), seals, squid and fish. A well-developed sense of smell plus rows of replaceable teeth add to its predatory skills as it swims the warm, shallow waters of the world's oceans looking for prey. The book's color photo illustrations are stunning. Extras like the boxed "Shark Facts" and featured vocabulary words on every page spread enable a young reader to learn more about these nocturnal predators. The book points out that this amazing animal's prime enemy is humankind. Tiger sharks get caught in fishing gear and fishermen hunt them for their fins, oil, liver and meat. I can only think of one shortcoming for this book and series: while the reader infers that the names of tiger, zebra, etc. sharks have something to do with the land animal it resembles in some way, the author doesn't state this specifically. Young readers like to read about this sort of thing. This book has a lively format and includes a glossary, index, list of books to read about tiger sharks plus an age-appropriate web site.
