Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
For those who may have missed the Master's Golf Tournament this year, they missed seeing the culmination of dedication, training and concentration that resulted in Tiger Woods winning his third Master's. This early reader will inform and inspire kids who may want to make a career in sports or just to believe in themselves and know that with hard work and a bit of natural talent there can be success. The photographs are a delight—baby Tiger playing with a little golf club, later at three actually swinging a club and by the age of five scoring in the 90s on an 18-hole golf course. There doesn't seem to be much standing in Tiger's way. He will continue to break records and also demonstrate that a "big star" can be nice, work closely with kids and serve as a role model. Young boys and girls will really home in on this engaging biography. Part of the "All About Reading" series.
—Marilyn Courtot

    Tiger Woods

'Tiger practically flew through his final round, hitting towering drives and sicking perfect putts. The rest of the field had been left so far behind that they didn't even seem to exist. The Masters Tournament and Tiger Woods had become one. With a golf club in his hand, he was a poet, he was an artist, and he was a true master. When it was all over, he had won by a record-breaking 12 strokes!' The book, 'Tiger Woods - An American Master' is a biography by Andrew Gutelle. The book told about his life from when he could barely hold a club, to winning his first tournament, and all the way to conquering The Masters. It is full of information telling about his family and his life off the course and the difficulties he went through to get to where he is today. I hope I did not tell you too much so if you would like to find out more you must get the book youself. Personally, this was not my favorite book mainly because it was not a solid and descriptive book. Of course, I loved the end of the book because that is when he won his first major PGA tournament. Also, it really started to pick up the pace and finally caught my attention. Of course the beggining and middle was a drag because it used too many of the same words over and over again like the word 'master'. Judging from the large print and no desriptiveness, it was probably for less advanced readers. Either way this book shows that determination and self-confidence can really go a long way. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would have to give this book a dissapointing 4.5 because of it's vagueness. Jackson Hart, 6th Grade

    Tiger Woods

'Tiger practically flew through his round, hitting towering drives and sinking perfect putts. The rest of the field had been left so far behind that they didn't even seem to exist. The Masters Tournament and Tiger Woods had become one. With a golf club in his hand he was a poet, he was an artist, and he was a true master. When it was all over, he had won by a record-breaking 12 strokes!' Tiger Woods could be considered one of the greatest golfers to ever play the game. He has broken so many records you can't even start to count them all. He was the first African-American and the youngest player to ever win the Masters. Tiger lived in a very tough time though, because some places would not allow black people to play on the courses. The biography, 'Tiger Woods' by Andrew Gutelle, tells you all about that and so much more about this amazing player. The author writes about Tiger from when he could barely hold a club to the time when he won his first tournament, to when he became #1 in the world. This book shows the other side of Tiger, his days as a child learning the game of golf until his professional career began. The book addresses the difficulties Tiger endured to get to where he is today. Even though the book was very informative, it was not my favorite because it never really grabbed my attention like I thought it would. Being a golfer myself, I hoped that this book would have given me some tips on Tiger's practice habits or possibly what he thinks about while playing a round of golf, but it didn't do so. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the ending because it got more descriptive about what was going on and carried my attention to finish the book. The beginning was slow but since I'm a golfer I was intrigued and curious about Tiger so I kept reading. The information about Tiger's life during the middle part of the story did not really seem to grasp my attention. I did not feel very entertained until the end of the story, but I feel that biographies are supposed to be more informative than entertaining. Judging from all of this I would give the book a disappointing 5 on a scale of 1 to 10 because of its inability to hold my complete attention. Jackson Hart 6th Grade
