Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
Tigers are beautiful although somewhat intimidating creatures. The fact that they share a family with the domesticated house cat is sometimes hard to understand. One difference between the housecat and the tiger is that the tiger enjoys being in water. Tigers can live in several different habitats and prefer to live alone. Few animals hunt adult tigers. The greatest risk to the life of the tiger is loosing its habitat to the human. Some countries protect land for the tiger, not allowing people to hunt or build in these areas. These lands are the best way to increase the tiger's chance to live. Part of the series "World of Mammals," this series teaches the reader about different mammals, using quick facts and lots of photographs. Although the terms that are defined in the glossary are not indicated in the text, an index, a glossary, and supplemental reading and Internet site pages make this a series worth look at for older elementary collections, and middle school classrooms with reluctant readers. Internet sites are reached by viewing Facthound.com, a database that has already researched the sites and classified them according to age appropriateness. The code needed for accessing this web site is given at the back of the book.
