Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
.the "Amazing Animals" series will attract both beginning and struggling readers. The large, beautiful photos on each spread include vivid shots of animals in action as well as close-ups of their faces. Photo captions consistently add interesting animal facts, and occasional vocabulary words are defined at the bottom of the pages, adding to the clean, appealing layout. In addition to the engaging photos, the text is laid out in a large, easy-to-read font. The text, although made up of simple sentences, conveys plenty of interesting information.

Living on the continent of Asia are large, wild cats, the tigers. Beautiful color photographs capture this striped animal on each layout. The text provides brief and basic information about the tiger and its physical features, habitat, diet, and characteristic behaviors. The last section of text is a summary of a pourquoi tale of how the tiger got its stripes. Young readers may need some guidance with the informational text features. Some of the pictures have captions. There are color, bold print words that are defined at the bottom portion of the page. A simple index is found at the back of the book along with a list of additional book titles about tigers. A couple of websites with brief descriptions are included for further exploration. This text is part of the "Amazing Animals" series, which also has books about the koala, the swan, and the giraffe. The series follows a similar format and presentation of information about the featured animal. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung

The animals covered in these titles are certainly impressive and interesting, but nowhere does the author make a case for them being "amazing." Simple, uncluttered spreads consist of a few sentences of large text against white space opposite a full-page, captioned color photograph. Glossary terms are highlighted within the narrative and defined at the foot of the page. A brief list of text and online sources, as well as a simple index, are included, which makes these books suitable for beginning reports. The inclusion of a relevant folk tale at the end of each title is a welcome touch, but the stories are unsourced. Simple text and oversize pictures make this a suitable series for emerging readers to tackle on their own, or for sharing in a classroom setting.
