Children's Literature - Joan Kindig
The sabertooth cat is an unusual prehistoric creature that children will be fascinated to learn about. They look remarkably like the housecats many children have at home with one big difference: giant fangs!!! This nonfiction beginning reader encourages children to read along with the narrator. As each word is enunciated, it is highlighted for fledgling readers. As their ability grows, readers turn off the narrator's voice and have the highlighting continue. This DVD is bilingual. One track is read in English and the other is offered in Spanish. Both texts appear on the page, allowing children to select the option that best fits their needs. The DVD has all of the typical features of nonfiction book, including a table of contents, a glossary, and an index. In addition, it has all the features of a beginning reader, such as short and direct sentences, word repetition, few words on each page, and a nice balance of new and familiar words. Colorful illustrations provide an extra level of support. The DVD is simple to use and allows readers to access information about the sabertooth cat on the computer while still interacting with printed words. Good for use at home or in the classroom, this DVD both encourages independence and provides much-needed support. For adventurous and inquisitive students, a list of Internet sites is provided. Reading Level: Grades K-1; Interest Level: Grades PreK-2. Reviewer: Joan Kindig, Ph.D.

This page-by-page facsimile of Helen Frost's book (Capstone, 2007) provides basic information about the sabertooth cat-appearance, group behavior, hunting, habitat, and extinction. Double-page spreads feature computer rendered images that are lifelike enough to be slightly scary, showing an animal that looks like a cross between a puma and a hyena with very big teeth. The corresponding text is printed in English on the top of the page and Spanish on the bottom. Unfamiliar vocabulary is printed in orange and defined, in both languages, in the glossary at the conclusion. The index, located at the end of the book, is brief but accurate, though less useful for the computer platform than the print version. The book can be read in English or in Spanish, and the audio can be turned off. In the review copy, turning the audio on actually turned the sound off and vice versa, a potential source of frustration for young users. The clearly read English and Spanish renditions are well paced. Buttons allow for backing up and moving forward, although at times this resulted in a shutdown of the program, especially on the Macintosh platform; the same problem was sometimes encountered when changing languages. Clicking on the "website" button leads to a page listing three Web sites, all offering solid information about these animals. This program could be used in ESL instruction since the topic will interest the intended audience.-Ann Welton, Grant Elementary School, Tacoma, WA
