Overview

The power of music was truly tested during World War Two. Spirits were lifted and sustained overseas and at home by the great songs that proliferated the airwaves of the time. This well-chosen two-CD set collects many of the most beloved songs of the time in performances that hold their own as music, not just nostalgia. The big bands, of course, get their say: bandleaders including Benny Goodman ("And the Angels Sing"), Glenn Miller ("Moonlight Serenade"), Artie Shaw ("Begin the Beguine"), Les Brown ("Sentimental Journey"), and Count Basie ("One O'Clock Jump) are represented by some of their signature hits. The popular vocal stylists and vocal groups are also here: Bing Crosby ("White Christmas"), Vera Lynn ("White Cliffs of Dover"), Dick Haymes ("You'll Never Know"), The Andrew Sisters ("Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy"), The Mills Brothers ("Lazy River"), and the Pied Pipers ("Dream"). Dramatically interspersed are a few snippets of speeches by leading figures of the time such as President Roosevelt, General Eisenhower, and Winston Churchill.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - MacKenzie Wilson
Till Then: Music That Helped Allies Win War reminisces back to the days of WWII and the traditional pop music that characterized those perplexing times. This double disc is an appropriate collection of classics from Nat "King" Cole, Bing Crosby, Dinah Shore, the Andrews Sisters, Count Basie, and Artie Shaw & His Orchestra, making it an easy listen for any conservative fan or newcomer to the music of that era.
