More About This Book

Overview

Tilli Horn is a five-year-old farm girl in a tiny village in eastern Germany when World War II begins. Her family opposes Hitler's Nazi Party, but is powerless to rebel. Tilli is forced to join a Hitler Youth group and, as the war intensifies, her father and 16-year-old brother are drafted. She grows up with air-raid drills, nearby bombings, and fear.

After the war ends, Russian soldiers invade Tilli's village, sending her and other girls into hiding in a secret attic crawlspace. There they stay for months, huddling in the dark, windowless space, fearing the raping, looting soldiers. It is to no avail, as Tilli is assaulted at age 11.

With Communist repression replacing Nazi tyranny, Tilli dreams of a free life in America. Her solo escape to West Germany at age 16-hidden in a potato wagon-is one of this moving and ultimately hopeful book's many highlights.

    An outstanding book!

I absolutely loved this book! Tilli's own story of her life growing up in Germany during WWII is an open window to her heart. Her accounts of the suffering that the German people endured during this time under Hitler's control, was at times both chilling and thought provoking. It opened my eyes me to a whole other perspective of WWII, one that was never taught in school. I would highly recommend this book and would hope that it becomes a staple in our schools along side the Diary of Anne Frank.

    I couldn't put it down

A wonderful testimony to strength of will! This is the first book that I've read in years that I just couldn't wait to read more of. I resented having to stop for any reason whatsoever.

Best Story I've Read in Many Years!

What an amazing story.  I was crying with Tilli and her family, smiling when Tilli went to the dance, scared when Tilli was in the attic and walking alone to and from school, every emotion Tilli had is how I felt reading this book.  I could not put the book down until I was finished with it.  It took a few hours but I started the book and finished it yesterday.  Tilli is a remarkable person to share her experience like she did.  This had to be like reliving everything over and over.   This story ought to be in our school systems.  I think our kids could learn a lot from Tilli's story.  The book was written fantastic. Tilli and her family will always be in my thoughts and prayers.  Thank you for writing such a wonderful book.

    Unforgetable story

I loved this book. The way the author draws you into Tilli's life makes you feel like you are right there with her experiencing her pain, loneliness, anger and feeling the danger and excitment . I admire Tilli's strength for keeping faith in what she believed in and stood for. She had courage and determination to find a new life for herself.

    a MUST read!

From the moment I opened this book, I could not put it down - a rarity in today's literary market. Ms Collier drew me into Tilli's life and recreated the places and experiences so vividly that these images remain fresh in my memory. This is a story that must be read by everyone - especially our young people! In a nation where we take our freedoms for granted, this is a fresh reminder that things can change in a heartbeat! This was truly a story of great faith in the face of horrific tragedies - and incredible sacrifice. Thank you, Tilli, for sharing your life with us! A truly inspirational read!! BRAVO!!

    I laughed and cried

I laughed and cried throughout this book. That is how I judge if a book is good. If it can make me do either of these, it's got my attention. As a matter of fact, it had my attention so much that I was reading it at one point for a full three hours straight. 'My thoughts are free' makes you feel like you are Tilli Schulze. It also makes you appreciate growing up in America. Buy this book, read it, you won't regret it!
