This book offers great advice on dressing for everyone. It is a wonderful guide for building a wardrobe and using what you already own to your best advantage. I am so glad I purchased this book. I use it frequently when planning on making additional wardrobe purchases.

Don't open this book expecting 'before' and 'after' photos or expecting body shape descriptions. Instead, this book is like spending a few days in the very good company of Mr. Tim Gunn. Having met Tim on several occasions, I can tell you Project Runway fans that he is every bit as kind and generous with his time in person. An utterly delightful, humble man who seems honestly surprised at his new celebrity status. But back to the book - with Tim's distinctive voice, it takes you through the elements of style, as opposed to fashion or trends. 'Quality, taste and style' will become your mantra whether you're shopping for a raincoat, theater tickets, wedding china, or a paint color for your living room! Yes, there is advice you've heard before - buy the best quality you can afford, keep it simple, have your clothes tailored - but there is also plenty of new things to ponder. I loved his advise of, once determining which clothes you really love, that you wear them for the next week. You quickly discover whether you are buying clothes that are appropriate for your current lifestyle. Frankly, who could ask for fresher eyes to look over your wardrobe that the inimitably elegant Mr. Tim Gunn?

It might even help some teenagers to stand up straight- "Shoulders away from the ears". It is also great to help an individualistic teenager to have confidence that she doesn't have to wear it just because everyone else is!
I am older (old), but Tim Gunn has such style and kindheartedness. This book brings out the best in a person to be an individual not one of a group. He puts it simply, quietly and with style. Everyone can be chic, but everyone is chic in the same clothes.
Mr. Gunn you did it for me and it is a wonderful keep for reference and future referral book
Thanks.
Carol

" A Guide to Quality, Taste & Style" was an enjoyable and insightful read. The Project Runway mentor imparts his fashion wisdom in his completely unassuming dignified Tim Gunn-esque way. Have your dictionary handy too... Tim's as intelligent as they come and has some great big vocabulary words to prove it.

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.Tim Gunn seems to understand how self-esteem and fashion correlates and as such his charm and ability to motivate people have always distinguished him from other shallow fashion icons. In his book, however, he comes across as quite snobbish, often using too much fashion jargon and losing the reader in somewhat stream of consciousness paragraphs. Another thing that could have been done better was to make his book more visual. Quite a number of people need to be pre-schooled in the arts of fashion (myself included)therefore photos of "before" and "after" or even "this is how you do it" ones would have proven to be priceless and much appreciated. Admittedly Tim does try to get across that common theme that one must love oneself before one can show it on the outside and that is definitely worthy of some praise.

I really want Tim Gunn to move in next door. I'll pick up your mail when you're out of town if you will periodically stop by and help me put together outfits. Is it a deal, Tim? Enjoyed this book and even learned a few new vocabulary words (Bildungsroman).

Tim Gunn gives some good advice, but in most areas, I couldn't find the advice buried in all those words. At times, I couldn't figure out exactly what he was advising. I always appreciate it when fashion authors just give the advice and don't wax poetic.
