All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
This set from Sounds of Yester Year assembles some of Jack Teagarden's glory tracks from when he fronted a swing big band between the years 1939 and 1944. There are 22 cuts here, most of which have Frankie Trumbauer. Some of the material stretches the notion of swing, such as "Mr. Jessie Blues" and "Bashful Baby Blues," bringing the deep New Orleans historical aesthetic into the soloing. But there are many of Teagarden's finest moments as a singer, too, such as "Devil May Care" and the title track. Not an essential collection by any means, but a thoroughly enjoyable one nonetheless.
