Overview

Calling Anna and Bennett's romance long distance is an understatement: she's from 1995 Chicago and he's a time traveler from 2012 San Francisco. The two of them never should have met, but they did. They fell in love, even though they knew they shouldn't. And they found a way to stay together, against all odds.

It's not a perfect arrangement, though, with Bennett unable to stay in the past for more than brief visits, skipping out on big chunks of his present in order to be with Anna in hers. They each are confident that they'll find a way to make things work...until Bennett witnesses a single event he never should have seen (and certainly never expected to). Will the decisions he makes from that point on cement a future he doesn't want?

Told from Bennett's point of view, Time After Time will satisfy readers looking for a fresh, exciting, and beautifully-written love story, both those who are eager to find out what's next for Time Between Us's Anna and Bennett and those discovering their story for the first time.

Gr 8 Up—Readers familiar with Anna and Bennett's "long distance" relationship from Time Between Us (Disney-Hyperion, 2012) will enjoy following their story, this time through Bennett's eyes. Back in modern-day San Francisco, he tries to see Anna as often as possible in 1995 Evanston, IL, traveling across both space and time to do so. Things start to go wrong when Bennett loses control over his strange ability. After saving Anna's best friend from a car accident in the first book, he begins to change the past in order to avert other tragedies. He must grapple with the moral implications of his special gift and the increasingly intense headaches and bloody noses he experiences upon returning to his own time. Paying too much attention to the rules governing relativity and the space-time continuum may give readers headaches of their own, but the plot marches along at a good pace and those who like romance/adventure stories will want to find out if Anna and Bennett end up together. With the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who and movies like About Time (2013) at the box office, the time-travel theme gives this book plenty of pop-culture cachet.—Gesse Stark-Smith, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR

Bennett mooches around his family's high-end San Francisco house in 2012, waiting for his girlfriend, Anna, to return to Evanston, Ill., from her summer in Mexico--in 1995. Bennett uses his amazing, inexplicable ability to travel through time to visit Anna in a series of trips that can't feel anything but futile. With 17 years between them, how can this romance survive? Anna's parents, ignorant of Bennett's abilities, become increasingly resentful of his seemingly cavalier treatment of their daughter. If he can't stick around, why doesn't he just leave her alone? And why does Anna put up with it? Meanwhile, in 2012, Bennett begins to use his talent the way his father always wanted him to: to correct senseless tragedies. Remarkably, he feels great after these interventions, not drained and afflicted by migraines the way he usually does after traveling back through time. Conversely, his returns from visits to Anna are becoming increasingly bloody and debilitating. Bennett serves as present-tense narrator of this sequel, describing his various agonies, physical and emotional, as he continues to pursue this hopeless relationship. Once again, Stone fails to provide readers with a solid understanding of Bennett's singular ability, seemingly changing the rules to suit her plot and characters--up to and including an apparently impossible resolution. There's romantic angst aplenty but little else to keep readers invested in either story or characters. (Fantasy. 12-16)

I enjoyed this book, just not as much as the first book. This time the story is told from Bennett's point of view, in first person again. I enjoyed the change in POV. It's always nice to get inside another character's head. The plot picks up right after the end of Time Between Us. Bennett is having issues with his time travel and cannot get stay with Anna very long. It takes "long distance romance" to a whole new level. I don't know what it is with love stories after the initial falling in love. This story just didn't hold my interest as much as the original book. It was more of a typical contemporary YA book. I wanted more action and plot. I enjoyed reading more about these characters because I really liked them, and I was rooting for them to whole time. But I had a harder time looking past the obvious flaws in the time travel mechanics of this story. http://www.momsradius.com/2016/03/book-review-time-after-time-ya.html

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Disney Book Group, Disney-Hyperion, and Netgalley.) This is the second book in the ‘Time Between Us’ series, and kicks off a short time after the end of book 1 ‘Time Between Us’. **Warning – some unavoidable spoilers for book 1 ‘Time Between Us’.** Anna is back from Mexico, and she can’t wait to see Bennett, even though it means him travelling back from 2012 to do it. Bennett is still having issues with his time-travel abilities though, and he doesn’t think that he can stay with Anna in 1995 for the school year, instead he’s going to have to just come back and visit her every few weeks, even though they both know it will be hard. Can Anna and Bennett continue their long-distance love? Is Bennett really supposed to use his gift to go back in time and save people’s lives? And is Bennett being in Anna’s life changing it too much? This was a great second book in this series, and it was great to catch up with Bennett and Anna. Anna and Bennett continued to love each other, but were also confused about their relationship in this book. They had the problem that their long-distance relationship was not only over a physical distance, but also a time span of 17 years, which was obviously difficult. Bennett’s inability to keep himself in 1995 for more than a few days impacted on them massively, as did Bennett’s worries that he was changing Anna’s life too much just by being in it. I liked the storyline in this book, and I liked how we once again revisited the topic of ‘do-overs’ and whether or not Bennett should use his gift to go back in time and help people who may have been injured or killed prematurely. There were quite a lot of questions raised by this that maybe weren’t answered fully, but I think that was to be expected taking into consideration the topic of time travel! The romance in this book was really sweet, even considering the restraints on Bennett and Anna’s relationship, and I really wanted things to work out for them. It was so sad that they were separated by so much, and that they couldn’t be together like a regular couple. I liked the ending to this story and the hope that it contained. I’m not sure if there will be more books in this series but if there are I definitely want to read them! Overall; a great YA time-travel romance. 7.75 out of 10.

This is an enjoyable follow up from Bennett's point of view. I didn't remember a lot of details, but it did a pretty good job of naturally reminding what happened. I remembered that romance that shouldn't have happened because in different times but did anyway, that I thoroughly enjoyed. And while it is present in this one, we see them apart more than book one. We see a lot of character development from Bennett and him struggling with the limitations of his travelings, and possibilities of changing what bothers him.      Bennett is as sweet, charming and conscientious as ever, but he does learn a lot about how he has been spreading himself thin. He realized the friends and family in both places that wanted and deserved his whole head instead of always divided between two times or not.      I flew through the story, hoping for certain things to fall into place, some suspicions confirmed that I wished weren't true, and other twists taking me by surprise.     To me, I forgot all of the details about time travel and the specifics, but I didn't harp over the inconsistencies or the things that didn't quite make sense because some of it I am not scientifically minded to understand anyways, I just love the concept not the hows or whys. So it may bother some people, but for me it is about the very idea of time crossed lovers and how they make that work in the emotional not science realm. And on that level Ms. Stone delivers beautifully.      There are some really tough choices explored and I loved the flawed perfection and internal struggle and anguish it brings out in the characters. It forces them to look past the blinders into their hearts for the answer even if it is not easy.     I reviewed Time After Time because it was available as an e-arc. But it is a book that I would have bought after release or at the very least checked out from the library, because I enjoyed the first book so much and I wanted to be back in their world and see what happens with their romance.      The ending isn't as complete as I would like it to be, but it is kind of perfect in that contemporary sort of way. In that the main issues in the book are tied up and there is a half way open ending where I can keep imagining the characters and how they get to the spot that I know they will be and what will happen to them after that.  Bottom Line: Sweet conclusion that I devoured.

I loved Time Between Us so much, that as soon as I finished it, I rushed to get the sequel, Time After Time. I didn't even read the summary to find out what it was about. I didn't care. It continued the story of Bennett and Anna and that was all I needed to know. So I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book tells the story from Bennett's point of view. Tamara Ireland Stone does a wonderful job of distinguishing Bennett's voice from Anna's. I love that we get inside his head and understand what drives him to travel, what inspires him, and what haunts him.  And the fact that half the scenes are set in my favorite city in the entire U.S., San Francisco and mentions more of my favorite bands, hooked me even without the compelling plot.  But the plot is just that. Compelling, irresistible, and different from the first book. Many second books can't live up to the promise of the first -- the sophomore effect. But Time After Time does not suffer from any of that. The fresh voice and unique twists the author throws at our two main characters kept me turning the pages into the early morning hours. I give Time After Time five out of five stars. Add this one to your list of must-reads. After you finish Time Between Us, of course.
