Time ... and again

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Scott Paulin
This album borrows its title, Time...and Again, from the work by Giya Kancheli that closes the program, but the reference to time -- and to repetition -- is relevant to all of the music here. Like Ukrainian-born violinist Vadim Gluzman, the featured composers in this recital emerged from various parts of the former Soviet Union: Kancheli from Georgia, Arvo Pärt from Estonia, Peteris Vasks from Latvia, and Alfred Schnittke from Russia. All four owe their renown in the West partly to the efforts of another violinist, Gidon Kremer, but Gluzman has nothing to fear from the comparison, for he makes these pieces entirely his own. Playing on a gorgeously pure and full-toned ...

Playing on a gorgeously pure and full-toned Stradivarius, he begins this diverse program with one of Schnittke's time-traveling pastiches, the Suite in the Old Style, before moving on to Pärt's "mystic minimalist" style, which seems utterly to defy time. In that composer's Fratres -- a true gem of late-20th-century music -- Gluzman is wondrously delicate and introspective, while Spiegel im Spiegel is sheer radiant simplicity. Vasks' Little Summer Music comes as the biggest surprise on the disc, a folk-inspired work allowing a restrained touch of humor before Gluzman launches into the somberly reflective Time...and Again. Some of Kancheli's works can seem too uneventful for their own good, but this half hour of music holds the attention, both through its frequent contrasts and its intensely plaintive emotional arch. Aside from the merits of all of these compositions, Gluzman and his accompanist, Angela Yoffe, deserve a great deal of credit for crafting such a coherent, convincing, and satisfying program.
