If you had one chance to change history...Where would you go? What would you do? Who would you kill?

In Time and Time Again, international best-selling author Ben Elton takes readers on a thrilling journey through early 20th-Century Europe.

It's the first of June 1914 and Hugh Stanton, ex-soldier and celebrated adventurer is quite literally the loneliest man on earth. No one he has ever known or loved has been born yet. Perhaps now they never will be.

Stanton knows that a great and terrible war is coming. A collective suicidal madness that will destroy European civilization and bring misery to millions in the century to come. He knows this because, for him, that century is already history.

Somehow he must change that history. He must prevent the war. A war that will begin with a single bullet. But can a single bullet truly corrupt an entire century? And, if so, could another single bullet save it?

Editorial Reviews

The Australian

Stanton's derring-do is diverting fun but the book's real strength happens to be both the calm-before-the-storm historical detail and the arresting vision of a dystopian future 'where love is treason ... and every person in the world is an ant, a drone, a robot'.
The Sydney Morning Herald

An entertaining, imaginative and intellectually teasing treatment.
Oscar-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson

Time and Time Again is, of all Elton's great and prophetic books, one of my favorites. He brings his forensic knowledge of the Great War and his miraculously uncynical insight about human nature to bear upon the ancient and vexed question: "What if the Archduke had never been killed?" The answer is as illuminating as it is chilling and makes for an unputdownable read.
Andrew Lloyd Webber

An absolute page turner. The historical perspective (both real and imagined) is forensically astute and the narrative thrillingly inventive. Ben Elton has remained England's secret too long, it is time America discovered him.
Hugh Laurie

As a writer, Ben Elton is a fizzing delight.
Sir Kenneth Branagh

Time and Time again is an exceptional thriller. Darkly comic, richly humane, and seriously entertaining. The final twist is spine chilling.
Woman Magazine (UK)

A clever time-slip novel with such a page-turning tangle of intrigue that you'll never be able to second-guess where the story is heading.
author of the Chronos Files series Rysa Walker

A fascinating novel, rich with historical detail and vivid, memorable characters. "What historical event would you change" is a classic conundrum of science fiction, but Elton tackles the question with originality and unpredictable twists that will delight fans of time travel and historical fiction alike. Strongly recommended.
New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Susanna Kearsley

Beyond brilliant! Ben Elton puts his unique stamp on time travel and the result is pure magic. A thrilling, original, and unforgettable ride of a novel, and one of the best books I've read in a very long time.

Hugh Stanton, visiting his old Cambridge professor at Christmastime in 2024, gets pulled into one of their old "what if?" games. Professor McCluskey liked to challenge students to think of the one thing in history they would change. It turns out not to be an idle question this time, and Hugh learns that the professor was the inheritor of a box of papers left by Isaac Newton to be opened that very Christmas. The 17th-century scientist had predicted a loop in time, when 2024 would overlap with 1914, allowing a traveler to go back in time. Hugh is tasked with going back to that fateful year to stop one of the turning points in world history: the start of World War I. VERDICT Elton's (Two Brothers; High Society) thoroughly entertaining entry in the time-travel genre gives readers a dashing leading man trotting the globe on his secret mission to a historical moment fraught with danger, in which every choice can have unintended consequences.—MM
