Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"These will be an effective way to introduce animal habits and to link them to human behavior, and they may elicit audience interest in further discussion and exploration." —Bulletin

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Jenkins and Page use a smaller format than usual here for their exploration of how sixteen creatures keep themselves clean. A few informative sentences, sometimes with humorous notes, accompany the illustrations of this cleansing, on single or double pages. Included are tigers, the rhinoceros, the emu, the vulture, ants, the pangolin, snow monkeys, the elephant, the jerboa, the jackrabbit, the gecko, the hummingbird, the roseate spoonbill, the scarlet cleaner shrimp, the tomato grouper, and white-tailed deer. Cleaning methods range from using mud and dust to licking with a tongue. The cut paper images, remarkably naturalistic, are sometimes of complete creatures like the jackrabbit and sometimes of only a part, like the gecko's head and licking tongue. Occasionally a bit of context like a pool of water for the spoonbill adds attractive color; but mainly only the animal is represented. The two white-tailed deer seem to be happy as they lick each other clean, while the elephant expects to sneeze as it blows dry dust over its body. Further details on each included creature are added at the end of the book. The couple also has similar books about eating and sleeping. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
