Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leigh Geiger
Although this almanac is geared toward mid-grade readers, it will appeal to some older students as well. Every page beckons the reader with eye-popping photos, maps and other cool graphics. The layout is kid-friendly as fun facts, games and trivia are interspersed with well-researched information. Some topics are presented from a kid's point of view, such as a look at successful charities, which focuses only on initiatives started by children—some in preschool. The effects of the Taliban in Afghanistan are introduced through the ears of a principal listening to her second grade students. Yet the text never "talks down" to kids. The reader is always treated with respect. The editors have struck a nice balance between basic encyclopedia-style facts and popular topics that will arouse a kid's curiosity. There are short listings of facts students might need for school papers such as all the U.S. presidents or the capitals, population and other information for every U.S. state and all of the countries of the world. Then there are thought-provoking discussions of topics such as "Should the U.S. Require Volunteer Service?" or "Is the Web Site You Are Reading Reliable?" The almanac opens with a recap of national and international news and ends with a look to the future by predicting advancements in science, technology and our homes. A table of contents organizes the sections by topic area from arts and entertainment through history, literature and science, with many more topics in between. A moderately thorough index ensures that students will find this text to be a useful reference tool. Reviewer: Leigh Geiger, Ph.D.
