    Ameteur work at best

I am currently on page 13 of this novel, and much to my disappointment, I must already concede that it was a waste of my money. I've read better and worse but no other Sherlock Holmes story has ever convinced me that it was published while still in its rough draft. The first chapter, while Watson is mildly entertaining at first, claims that it's Holmes and Watson speaking to one another but I fail to recongnize them as such. The personality just isn't there. It begins with Watson being summoned to Sussex to see the retired Holmes who offers him a wine and explains it is the elixir to life. Voila! Watson is immortal. No "I see you were in yada-yada last week" or "elemenary my dear Watson" just this, and the whole thing is over as fast as a footnote. Suddenly in the next chapter you are rewarded a brief mentioning that the pair are in the 1990's, there's a murder, and thus the duo are off to London. All in 13 pages. If you want a good old Holmesian yarn with a brilliant master detective instead of a condensed Dr. Who episode, this is not the book for you. One star because it's a good concept, and the other because I've see worse.
